Define "Punch" sound from an amp......

TB has a bass tone glossary. See the wiki's.

Punch | TalkBass.com

Bass Tone Glossary | TalkBass.com

That was interesting, Many of my definition's were/are way off I guess!!

I always defined "punch" as a pleasant scooped sound, most wouldn't agree with that!! I also always used "wet" as the same thing, I was way off!! I'll just refrain from using some of these terms I've thrown around to avoid confusion, oh well;)

My personal definition of punch would differ the TalkBass Tone Glossary. I always thought of punch as a really quick and pronounced attack and well defined sound.

The wiki lists the person who compiled the list at the bottom of the page. You can PM @luknfur and ask about the source. These definitions are not written in stone, any refinement is a positive thing for the TB community.

No question that these terms mean different things to different people. When someone says, I want it to have more spank, I think more high end, how much is subjective. It might mean something else to you.

Seems that lunkfur hasn't been active here in four years.

This is the current definition for Punch:
  • Strong lows/mids that produce a pronounced Dull initial Attack - muted/padded kick drum-like in character (Reflective artist: Berry Oakley).
  • Dull: Thuddy - lacking upper frequencies. The opposite of "Articulate."
  • Attack: 1) process of setting a string in motion 2) rate of response of a pickup to the input signal
If we can come up with a better definition in this thread, I can modify the wiki to reflect what is decided.

When I want to add more punch, I use a compressor and add a sharp attack, EQ to boost lows and mids.
