Delay Pedal

LOVE delay. Use it quite a lot! The tc flashback comes with me wherever I go. I have an X4 but it's so bulky I usually leave it home just for practice time. Really want a Nova Repeater too, I think that's next on my to-buy list. Could replace my flashback.

I just got an endangered audio AD4096 last week. Love the pedal. Sounds beautiful! The only complaint I have that the time can't be slowed down very much. But other than that, it sounds and functions wonderfully. I also picked up a joyo Dseed. Awesome delay. Four modes of delay, dual channels and again, sounds wonderful and functions simply. This is a wonderful delay. Very please. My ol' DOD DFX9 is still staying though. There's just something about that thing that makes it a really really great delay.

I just got a Violetta by Red Witch. Has modulation, 1,000 milliseconds, repeats and self oscillates easily. Its mono and it doesn't have tap tempo. Brand new it was $120!!! Did I mention it's tiny, really small. So far so good. I'm only using delay for ambient parts like intros and outros and the occasional mid song breakdowns. I think it's going to work perfectly for what I want. YMMV. It couldn't hurt to check it out.

I have an older Ibanez DE7 I just love. Don't use it often but every once in a while... I took a swing at a song that the new band had been kicking around long before I showed up but never apparently got traction on. I was watching the snow fall outside my practice room and decided to drop on a real trippy delay with 4-5 repeats in time with the song. They were sort of stunned and when I was apologetic thinking I had gone a little too far left-field they were like, no,no, don't change a thing! Like any other frosting, do overdo it. Delay rocks!!

I have a ZOOM delay but it doesn't seem to have the same "depth" as the Ibby. Can't dial it in the same.

I like the Line 6 DL4 because of the Boss Space Echo and Memory Man settings. I don't like the big footprint and I don't want the looping capability. And I don't want a delay that can do many different sounds that I'm not interested in, I just want it to do one sound exceptionally well. So I've been shopping for delays too. Here's what I am interested in...

AD4096 - sounds terrific, expensive. Has 2 types of delay which you can combine. Momentary runaway feedback switch, expression pedal input.
Strymon El Capistan - possibly best all-around tape delay, expensive. Momentary runaway feedback switch, expression pedal input, tons of tweakability.
Deluxe Memory Boy - has effects loop for your trails. (Want to add your 12-step phaser on your trails?) Expression pedal input.
Electroman - has effects loop for your trails. Momentary runaway feedback switch.
Boss Space Echo - the delay for Portishead sounds, many dub reggae LPs. Great if you want that flavor. Momentary runaway feedback switch, expression pedal input.
Freakshow Digilog - Momentary runaway feedback switch.
Catalinbread Belle Epoch - Tape echo style like El Capistan, but less features and less expensive.

In the end, I wound up buying a Belle Epoch (it's in the mail). It seemed to have a good balance between price, size and sound quality. But no momentary runaway feedback switch, and no expression pedal input.

I've quickly become a huge fan of the digitech hardwire series when it comes to reverb and delay. Basically all the features of digitechs regular pedals and then some, better sound quality and no tone suck. The poly tuner can be used to power the other hardwire pedals just like boss pedals. They are pricey but IMO compared to a boss dd5 (which is close to the same price) they are definetly worth it. And the delay has a looper. Another thing is the delay and reverb have a modulated setting. The modulated settings add chorus and for me personally it means i don't need a dedicated chorus pedal because i personally only use chorus with delay or reverb anyways. So the price is even better when you consider your basically getting a chorus pedal as well.

What's the Kilobyte like? I was checking it out because it has the runaway feedback switch, but I didn't delve too deeply. Care to do a quick review?

I like it a lot. It's pretty versatile. Here's the lowdown. It's a fairly standard digital delay, but it has the added features of modulation as well as the ability to overdrive the repeats. So you can go from clean repeats to a warbly, etherial wash. The modulation is adjusted via an internal trimpot (or an outer knob modded from Caroline), and the gain on the repeats has it's own control. I actually liked the factory setting on the modulation, but I did turn it up just a little bit. I also use the drive pretty high. Like I said, a lot of character. The feedback switch is a definite bonus, but not unique. A lot of folks would like tap tempo, but I usually lock my delay in a given setting time-wise, but then again I'm mostly playing on my own lately.
