As well as quite difficult to maneuver.
I suppose you could have hollowed them out and put them on wheels, with room inside for human operators to move them about - but think of the smell.....

From my research Bottesini had 2 keys for his second concerto, Bminor and C minor. The B minor was written for piano and the C minor was written with orchestra. Though, one would assume that he had these (many of his pieces he wrote in several keys) written and in several revision to find the right one that he wanted to perform.
