I've seen him do the keyboard thingie alright but that was a more recent video....

That's a pick (probably discarded toward the end).

Ox would usually play "My Generation" with a pick during this era.

He has referred to it as his "typewriter method".

The first I ever saw him do it was in the late '80s; I don't remember seeing him do it before then.

He did both pick & fingers alot in those days.
I used to see them a lot live back in the 60's/early 70's.He got more into fingers/tapping as he got into more modern tone(Alembic) basses although he finger & tapped his Fenderbirds.

+1 - the writer really gets at how/why Moon's unusual drumming style worked, and what part it played in Who music. He was indispensable, and the Who really lost its mojo when he died, IMO.

Yes ... on most of the tracks ... You can really hear it on "Magic Bus" ... He did fingerstyle on some like "Young man blues"
