Did greenboy just kill the Fearful ?

Try looking for " Boutique Bass Cab on a budget ", or something like that, in the search engine here. It turned into quite a megathread. The main cab that was modded was the Carvin LS1503. If I remember correctly, he finally decided that the Eminence 3015 ( non LF ), was a better match for that cab. I actually tried both the Carvin mod, and the fEARful 15 and 12 cabs, and preferred the Carvin. But, eventually I decided I was more of an old school bass player as far as tone goes, and went back to more conventional cabs. In fact, the only Greenboy design I actually bonded with was the Bassic 15.

I’m still using the two 15/6s w/ CBGs that I built (wow) 9 years ago. They are my gold standard for other designs that I’ve toyed with and/or built - and they can still sound better and are more versatile than any big name cabs.
What brought me here today was me wondering if I should build a 1515/6 to match the consistent volume level of my current band. Why carry two 15/6s when I can roll in one 1515/6? I wanted to see what was up in fearful land.
I’m glad Dave is enjoying retirement. It wasn’t hard to see that he would eventually stop supporting the fearful line at some point - he was always just as obligated to support his free designs as we were obligated to stick to those designs (to our own peril or pleasure).

So will the folks at Speakerhardware assemble their kits and parts into completed speakers - for a fair fee, of course - or do they strictly supply components?

I tried to go back to the GB forum today to look up a thread about the 15 Sub "subby sub" mod for using it under a 15/6. I know it was just adding a new cap along side the existing one to filter out some of the upper freqs so the two cabs didn't overlap so much. Does anyone happen to know what that mod was?

Used to chat with Dave periodically on FB, but that was some time ago and I gave my account the true death a couple of years ago. He struck me as a fine human being. Just seeing this thread now...but as someone who was a novice when it came do building this kind of thing...all the information needed is definitely available here on TB as well. Plans are hosted on Speaker Hardware still.
BTW. I was a fairly early adopter and my cabs have seen something like 500 shows since built and are still crankin'. I still love them though they've got the wear and tear of thousands of road hours and loads/unloads.

I'm sad to see the Greenboy forum go but can't say I'm surprised, activity there had almost dropped to zero.
I wish Dave all the best in his retirement and hope he has a long, healthy and happy one. I took early retirement 20 years ago and haven't regretted it one bit.

As someone who has lurked on the GB forum and threads on TB about them, this might be as good a place for me to ask my 2 nagging questions.
1. I had downsized to my Ampeg 210he for the past decade of Church, coffee shop, art show gigs. I _believe_ the answer is yes, but would the 12/6 would give more volume than that type of 2x10?
2. My sound is warmer, thumpier with a fair amount of palm muting and non-hifi growl… is Fearful inherently a bad match for that? Or do people who are not pursuing either a hi-fi sound or the "modern" scooped sound with glassy highs get what they want out of these?
I assume if I built one, I wouldn't be doing the horn version. Thanks!

I’d just be guessing one question one, but I’d go with yes. And I think you’d like the sound better. As for question 2, no worries.
Build a 12/6 with the inexpensive alpha 6 mid driver, and the CBG crossover. Either a rectangle form or the 12/6 cube. Skip the horn and all the extras involved.
The 12/6 is the big bang for the buck, simple build.
The cube is a bit more of a brain twister, but still a basic carpentry project. The crossover is easy simple, just four components. A Jack, a handle, plastic corners and whatever finish you like, and it’s a winner. Duratex is your friend.

A 12/6 should easily meet your volume needs. A speaker cabinet that is capable of a full range flat response just puts out what you put into it. You will always sound like you. It is much easier to get what you want from an uncolored cab.

Dave's an awesome guy and deserves his R&R. This project was a lot of fun and the small handful of cabs I built (and had built for me, initially) have been fantastic. It also got me off my duff and got me asking questions and learning new concepts and skills (like 3D modeling!) so even beyond the life of these boxes I'll be forever grateful for the overall experience he brought about.
For your enjoyment(?): Here's a goofy pic I threw together a decade or so ago, probably bored and drunk waiting for or after getting home from a gig.
