Did you ever laugh at someones strap ?

Back in my youth we were playing a hard-core show with a vegan straight edge band, and the bass player forgot his strap. Everyone in our band had leather straps (just so happened), and he refused to use one because he was vegan. We were playing in an old (kind of abandoned-looking) grange hall, and there literally wasn't a chair in the place. He started playing the show sitting on the stage in front of his amp until he realized how stupid that was, so he gave in and used my leather strap. So much for his vegan beliefs!!!:D

No. A strap? Who really cares about what kind it is and how high/low it is as long as it comfortably holds the bass?

It's about as inane as asking the question of whether anyone ever laughed at someone else's instrument cable.

Sorry, I don't intent to come off as rude, but the whole thing here is about laughing about someone's preferences (as if there's a "right strap" and "right height"), and it really goes absolutely nowhere.

No, but I've cried a little bit.

In 1997 I got back my old '63 P from my family's home. In the case was a really dated 60's strap with a vinyl back. Cheap.

About 2003 I happened across an auction on Ebay for an original 60's strap....and there was a pic of Jimi Hendrix wearing an identical strap.

Dang thing sold for about $400...and it was IDENTICAL to the old one that was in my bass case.

Which.....VERY unfortunately....I had thrown out not long before.

Sob! :bawl:

I'd-a had that thing on Ebay faster than lightning.

That's Quentin Berry.
He's from around here.
IIRC, he was not 'originally a violinist'...he was given a bass at a young age with no strap (IIRC) & thus did what he hadda do in order to hold it up & play.

The thing I don't get, midway through this solo:

He switches to a more standard approach, and in this reporter's opinion, sounds better. I don't know, I think at this point, it's an attention grabber.

Didn't he have any chairs either?

I don't know.
I have talked to him twice-
The 1st time, it was all about his SWR endorsement.
The 2nd time, it was all about his Spector endorsement.
...I think I need to dig out the Bass Frontiers issue that featured him (10 years ago?).

I know he used to play standard-style for slap/pop.
I'll take a look at your youtube link when I get the chance.

Full disclosure-
Once upon a time, I "auditioned" for a local Alt-Rock/Pop band that was pretty popular in Va. Beach. IMO, I nailed it...couple weeks go by & I don't hear anything.
I call the guitarist (a friend) & ask, "What's up"?
"Oh, we were waiting for Quentin to become available...so we hired him".

"goddamit, why didn't you guys just tell me what you were up to"?
;)

...and then there's the time that Oteil was hired for another gig that kinda had my name all over it.

That's a funky mutha! Hot damn! I liked it better when he didn't go slap-crazy (before he switched to the standard technique).

well, my GF is a vegan, and she still wears her doc marten boots, in leather. I asked her about this, and she said, well, first of, they're for my own security (or something equally weird) and second, I don't need to kill an animal everytime I wear them, which is the case with animal based food. fair enough.
btw, back on topic,
I have a screaming yellow strap that says "POLICE LINE, DO NOT CROSS" which I think is kind of funny, I don't know, maybe it's lame...
