It's not a joke as such - so where does the name "the Qintar" come from?

If you do any searches on Google - it only ever comes up as a Scrabble tactic for using a 'Q' when there are no 'U's left.

I am convinced that the Qintar could only have got this name from being a Scrabble "Nerd".

Which is quite ironically funny when you see how others treat him!

So - you all see him as some big hero - whereas it is more likley to be how Maki described it in his reply! :eyebrow:

Bruce...they just don't want to admit it. I heard his brain had been cryogenically preserved & only thawed out so he could ocasionally post here. It's part of a government conspiracy.

What makes you think Balkan numsimatologists wouldn't also play bass?

Perhaps he sees the incarceration of Samir Qintar as an injustice?

Maybe he's just into obscure arabic measures of area?

So if you do a google search :

Results 1 - 10 of about 1,680 for qintar scrabble

Which is way more results than anything else apart from Scrabble!

    Well - 2 things

Firstly - nobody has heard of him in 2000 - join date for "The Qintar" - also surely it would make more sense to call yourself Samir rather than "The" ..?

The inclusion of the definite article means that it clearly refers to the unit of currency - but as I said that is no longer used today, but its name is referred to, in every Scrabble dictionary and website as a high score tactic!

    QED! :p

    Huh?

Here's an article from 1999 that mentions him.

The qintar appears to equal to 102 pounds 6 ounces according to 'Levantine Weights and Standard Parcels: A Contribution to the Metrology of the Later Middle Ages' by E. Ashtor (Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Vol. 45, No. 3 (1982), pp. 471-488)

But my point is that things like those were exceedingly rare in 2000 - whereas Scrabble dictionaries and websites on Scrabble tactics were very common! :p

The most likely place you would have come across that exact name would be in the context of Scrabble !!

Or maybe he's this guy, Mark Chipeur, who on his resume lists his past experience as:

    • Bass Guitarist at Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Bailey Circus
    • Marketing and Inside Sales at Qintar
