My first bass was a 1980-ish Sears bass, straight from the catalog! I wish I still had it for sentimental reasons. I think I sold it to trade up, and have been doing that ever since.

The only bass I've hung onto from childhood was a 1986-ish Steinberger (the one with the wooden, triangle body). I worked/saved every penny for it as a teenager and never let it go. It's a bit out of commission, but maybe deserves some repairs so I can play it again.

Yes, but I like mine. It's a short-scale Hamer Slammer, and it actually sounds pretty sweet with old flats on it.

I still have my 1st bass, a ’62 Fender Bass VI bought from roommate for $250 while in college (theory/comp major) in ’75… a nosebleed to learn on from scratch and still my my daily driver after several decades of epic sessions and great memories. The ‘antique’ is my forearm wearing through the sunburst layers over 40+ years. Original pickups, a drop-in Dan Armstrong hotwire for series/parallel turns it into a big fat 3-bucker, a drop-in Staytrem bridge, had the neck re-planed once and a couple of re-frets.

I started playing about two years ago .... I live in China ... my first bass was a no-name bass made here ... since then, I have bought additional basses (Ibanez, Fender, Sandberg).

I lent my no-name out to a friend about 6 months ago and just got it back. Boy, I really do not like playing it. And don't like the sound either.

My apartment is small. Space is tight. Keep the 1st bass or let it go? Sentimentality over practicality?

My first bass back in 1982 was a 1976 Rickenbacker 4001. It hummed a lot so I had a local guitar guy put Seymour Duncan humbuckers in it. It sounded awful after that.

I sold it some time around 1986 or 1987.

No regrets.

However... I have owned three Ricks since then and I have left them more or less stock (except for my current one, the one I installed shielding in and did the RWRP mod to cut some of the buzz).

My first bass was a cheap Aria Pro II that I bought used from a friend. It was one of those bad entry models with plywood body and a PJ setting.
When I bought my second bass, which was a new Aria Pro II IGB805, I sold that bass to a friend.
I still have the second bass, it's the bass that I have longer in my collection and my only bass from 1994 untill 2015. It has been moded with a set of delano pu's and a Sadowsky onboard preamp. It plays so well and the tone is amazing right now.

I still have my first bass, it's a Squier Affinity Series P-Bass Special '97. When I started learning on it, it was a struggle because the setup was way out of whack with a mile high action and too much neck relief. Now that I know how to do a proper setup this bass plays phenomenally, I currently have it strung up DADG, and it has no problems staying in tune. All in all, Great first bass!

Mine was stolen along with my first car. I most likely wouldn't still have it had that not happened. If I'm not using something it gets donated (for the most part).

My first was a piece of junk I paid $10 for and it was probably worth it, but my first REAL bass was a Fender Musicmaster, around 1970. Wish I still had it. Sold it after I upgraded to an EB-0.

If you like it at all, keep it. Years from now, you'll be glad you did.

When I first started playing bass in 1975 I used my junior high school's Fender Musicmaster Bass, strung with black nylon tape strings; it was a great instrument. This photo from that time period shows a Fender Bassman 50 amp (50 watts and a 2x15" cabinet).

That was 37 years ago.
I stripped the finish off of it twice and ruined the electronics when I put it back together.
Threw it out and bought a second bass.

That is exactly what happened to mine, right down to the time frame and bass' likely country of origin.
