did you keep your 1st bass?

My first bass was a Fender Precision I bought used in around 1969.
The neck started to go in the late 70s, and I had it converted to Switch Boards (removable fingerboards (fretless fretted) it lasted a few more years that way, and the old neck replaced by a Warmouth 5 string(with a new bridge).
Replaced the old ratty sounding pickups with EMGs.
Recorded this song with it in 79;
Sweetbottom You Will Be The 1st To Know
I gave it to my son a couple years back.

That's cool. Don't think I have ever seen a pick guard like that unless it's the way it looks at an angle. Some blend of a grey/chrome/pearl? That's cool.

For the first 25 years of playing - but it helps when your first bass is a vintage (at the time, just old) Fender PBass

Nope, don't have it. It was a cheaper Yamaha 4 string bass, pretty nice but nothing special. Gloss black, no pickguard or anything, and pretty sure a PJ pickup combo. Learned me some Rage's Bombtrack on it and then progressed to a Spector bass. Loved that bass, but sold it later on as well.

I don't have the the very first bass that I ever owned, but I still have the second. The first was a 1960s Vox Phantom IV in red. I bought it in 1976 for about $200 at Hank John's House of Music in Parkersburg, W.Va. My dad made me sell it the next year, but I didn't mind; I was borrowing $350 from him to buy a bass and amp off of a substitute teacher who heard me playing with my junior high school's jazz band - he was moving from W.Va. to California on his motorcycle and couldn't take his 1965 Fender Jazz Bass and 1965 Bassman Amp with him (the bass is on another Talkbass thread). I still have the bass but parted with the amp by the early 1980s, since it wasn't powerful enough. I've checked out a few 1965-era Bassman Amps that have popped up locally, but none even come close to sounding like my Ampeg B-15, so I haven't picked one up.

No. My first bass was a Jack and Danny P-Bass from Musicstore in Cologne back in 1998. It wasn't a very high quality instrument and not worth it to me to bring to the US when I moved but it was enough to get me started (and hooked) on bass. However I bought an Ibanez ATK maybe 6 months later that I still have.

I've owned 7. I only own the most recent 3. I get rid of basses to get better ones. My first bass was a really cheap piece of garbage. I sold it for $40 and a batch of brownies and I don't regret it. Those brownies were good.

Nope, but I would -- if it weren't thieved whilst on tour.... Dipinto Belvedere Standard, loved it so much I bought a replacement. But, the 2nd one just didn't have the same mojo as the first... and come to find out, there were body differences that were legitimate. I wasn't just missing the mojo in my mind. Here's the only pic I have at the moment.

My first bass was borrowed. A fender squire that I recall having to ask a musician I knew at the time what to tune the strings to. It was a long time ago. After that my first paid for bass was a bright purple Charvel that sounded fantastic! That bass was stolen. I replaced it with a nice looking Heartfield bass that turned out to be a piece of junk so I got rid of that one. Then I picked up the G&L SB1 that I still have today.

Nope. Mine was a black/black/maple Peavey T-40 I got new in 1982 or 1983. In 1986, it was stolen out of a band practice room in college.

If it hadn't been stolen, I might still have it, but the weight was an issue. I used a flexible neoprene strap that helped -- which I wanted even at age 17! Who knows how I'd address it now.

Bummer! I used to have a gold Belvedere Standard, and mine definitely had the mojo, but as you discovered they definitely weren't all created equal. Luckily, I was able to pick mine from among several at the company store in Philly, and it had noticeably more punch than the others. They all sounded great, but mine was special, and it seems yours was too.

BTW, DiPinto has moved all production to the USA. Basses aren't available yet, but Chris D. told me they're coming. I could seriously go for a USA-made Galaxie.
