I am interested in producing a distorted sound best represented by the clips below (clips linked to good isolated tones) and wondered if anyone had any advice on gear (or technique?) that might be useful:
If I were to try to describe this sound (which I'm probably bad at), I would say it's a bit like a didgeridoo, it's a fairly wide sound (more like a Harley than a Kawasaki), and it's fairly rounded (lots of Ms and Bs rather than Ns and Ks).
Caveats:
1) I'm a bedroom player, so I don't need the people in the next township to hear it (although I would take pleasure in learning how to do that). If I can only do it through earphones, that's good enough for me.
2) I don't particularly care what the bands in the clips above are doing or actually sound like live. I just want to pluck my string and hear a sound like the one in the recordings.
3) I am prepared to hear that I would need to run a Ric through 10 stacked 70's MESAs and get someone to record a crappy bootleg and upload it to youtube, and thereby accept defeat. The demon that lives in my head is already very pleased with the sounds that I can currently make... It's just that when I listen to the recordings above she starts whispering about how she could be 10% happier.
