Difference between 250Hz and 600Hz

I thought that a P-bass pickup in the right location has a boost (relative to say a single coil pickup) around 250 hz?
Actually, what gives a P-bass its signature tone is its inherent signature boost @ 1kHz. That's the slider I always boosted when I played a song with my band 20 years ago when I played my 4002 as my main instrument and the song needed more "P" than "R," then slightly rolled off the treble on the instrument.

This should be obvious but just to make sure: that mid switch doesn't do anything unless you cut or boost your mids. If the mid knob is at the center (flat) position, flicking that switch does not affect the sound. But when you cut or boost the mids, you really should hear the difference. :)

This question comes up often enough that we are forced to conclude that this information is not obvious to everyone and you do those who don't know this a service by re-stating the "obvious:! If you come from the right background this is obvious, if someone told you this so long ago that you have forgotten that you needed to be told it is obvious, but to some fraction of humanity the connection between the mid knob and switch is not obvious at all, they have no reason to even suspect that there might be a connection between the two. Until someone is kind enough to tell them.

Thanks for the compassion, khutch. And, in response to the post khutch was responding to, there is no 'middle' position to the switch, as I think I already stated. If there were, I'd set it and forget it, but one is 'forced' into deciding since the switch is only 600 or 250, resulting in the need to know at least what the choices mean. On certain settings, you just cannot hear the difference, so it's almost like this info is needed as context in order to begin figuring out what to do. Thanks for the comments.

There isn't a middle setting on the switch, but there is on the mid pot; the switch only effects what frequency that pot is boosting or cutting.
