Digitech bp355 patch ideas

I've recently created a new rock bass patch on my digitech bp355. on my new patch, I've used amp models and have them distorted a little bit by turning up the amp gain level. I also added the voodoo lab sparkle drive model to add a little more grit. when I get a chance, I will record sound samples of my new rock bass patch and post it on my soundclick website. here's the patch

New rock bass

Wanted to give an update to my "sequencer" sounds.

There are some patches that will allow the LFO patch to work in looping mode with another patch. Meaning, you can start the loop with a sixteenth note rhythm, change patches and loop something else with it.

Also, been getting great funk sounds with the envelope filter, mainly the FX25 model. I dont use the distortion at all and for the amp model I go with the clean one. The sensitivity set to 70 range about 50-60. Been really digging this one. Now, the thing I have noticed is that the dynamics of your playing dictates how the sound with come out. The lighter I play the more wah I get. The tone settings on the bass itself factors the sound as well.

It is all about experimenting. "This knob does what?" "If I change amps on this sound will it sound better or worse?"
Etc.....

Even though you only get 20 seconds to loop you can still get some killer loops.

I usually will start a loop with a bass riff (No...really?) Now the thing about it is of course the timing. Say you do a cool little slap riff. What I like to do is mute slap a beat...most likely a straight 4/4. More than often I will do 8 beats of a simple mute slap as a guide with the last beat accented so you know where it stops and begins. The next thing would be the main line. Since you cant undo the loop without clearing the whole thing I start with a simple pattern, then add grace notes or fills to my liking. Next comes the counter part usually played an octave higher with a slight variation to the main line. Then I add some half or whole note swells for depth, kind of like keyboard pads. Latlely, I have been adding some double stop riff stabs.

I know players have their own methods but at least for me personally this method works best.

I've done an update on my metal bass patch along with my cool chorus patch. I've basically made some adjustments on both patches. here's my new and improved patches.

These are my new and improved patches for my bands.

Hey Crystalman,
I just received my BP the other day. i haven't had a chance to go through my amp with it, just through the headphones so I really can't form too many opinions yet. I really wish it had one more foot switch and that the tuner appeared on the display screen not just on the effects matrix. The octaver is REALLY glitchy but the autowah seems pretty juicy, chorus and flange are nice. I really wish the amp sim EQ's were under the amps sims not in a separate section and only 3 band eg? Or am I missing something? Only time will tell I guess.

Well brent,

It takes a little time to get to know the digitech bp355 and finding your Ideal sound. on the amp section, you get to select the amp and cab models and control to the amp gain level and the amp volume level. the EQ section is below the amp section. on the EQ section, you get to select an EQ type. there's Mid-boost, scooped, bright, and warm. also on the EQ section, it has a 4-band EQ control. there's bass, mid-frequency, mid-range, treble, and presence. so nothing's missing really. the amp section and EQ section are separate and the EQ section basically controls the tone of the amp section and the distortion channels(if you want to add distortion to your patch). like I've mentioned before, it take a little time to find your Ideal sound. you just need to explore all the effects, amp and cab models. once you find the sounds that are Ideal to you, program it on a patch and save the sounds you created on the patch. it's no big rush, you just need to take some time to create your sound on the digitech bp355.

Hi Brent. Like Crystalman was saying, it does take time to find the sounds that you like. I rarely use presets now cause I tweak the crap out of every patch. The octaver is very glitchy I agree. What I do is use the pitch or whammy for octave effects with very little to no glitching. Got to set the FX to pre (I think) and it seems to not be glitchy. I know theres a lot to take in with the unit, so take your time and get to know it. I am still trying different amp and speaker combos along with different distortions. But, the best thing in my opinion on the unit is the looper. Get creative.

Thanks for the thoughts Fellas.
One thing I wish they had done was the combining of amps like on the old BNX3. That allowed you to have 3 different sounds with one foot switch. Amp A, Amp B and a morph of the two. Some of the combinations were pretty cool, Ampeg SVT plus a Marshall guitar amp,etc

I recently came with a patch that duplicates the Isolated bass sound from the song them bones by alice in chains.

Them bones

Fretless/wah: off
Compressor: off
Distortion: spark---70---45---70---80
Amplifier(amp a): 65twin---am8x10---50---75
Amplifier(amp b): demter----am8x1o---50---75
EQ: bright---2---1714---3---3---4
Chorus: ehflgr---15---30---90
Reverb: off
Delay: off
Expression: level

Note: for those that don't know, mike starr uses a flanger when he recorded them bones with alice in chains. it's not that noticeable in the song, but if you hear the isolated bass track of the song, you would hear the flanger effect. perhaps mike uses a flanger effect in the song them bones to make song sound more atmospheric.

Just to prove that mike starr did use a flanger during the recording of them bones by alice in chains, here's a youtube of the isolated bass track of them bones.

Here's another patch that I came up with. this patch is suitable for those who play classic rock. I came up with this patch when someone on soundclick asked me about one of my sound samples and mentioned he plays in a rock band. I did tell him that I played the patch the way it was programmed and then gave him a patch suitable for the music he plays. so I came up with this patch.

Classic rock

I am all about the envelope filter on this unit and a cool tone I have been digging is as followed:

Set the FX25

post/ blend-75 / sens 80 / range 30

For distortion use the octaivia

I find reverb...mainly ambience with levels cranked...really brings out the "gooeyness" of the sound.

I find that by tweaking the tone knobs on my J bazz I can acheive better results than by using the EQ.

Now...slap away. Or pick or fingerstyle. Either way sounds awesome. Got to bring back that classic "Bootsy" sound.

The main trick, though, to getting this sound is by the dynamics of your playing. That is the fun part...when you nail that sound.

I see what you mean...personally, I'm into distortion and modulation effects. other than that, I come up with patches that can help out those that own a digitech bp355 like amp simulations and some nifty effects that many bass players can use. that's pretty much why I've started this thread. I've came up with some patch ideas and share them here. I also let other member share their patch ideas too.
