Digitech bp355 patch ideas

Hi all, and especially @Crystalman85: thanks for this thread, seems to be the most recently active given the "retired" status of the BR 355. I've had one since 2012, love it, had not really used it to its potential. Now in a Post Rock project, a trio, and therefore looking for more than the traditional bass sounds. Already using a few of the patches here, thanks!

Decided X-Edit is the way to go though. Got a link from Digitech for the software, but cannot get it to install on Win 11 machine. Has anyone had success installing X-Edit recently?
I don't remember how long I've had mine but, like you, I have yet to use it to it's potential. OTOH, I don't need to. Traditional bass sounds suit me fine.

I agree about using X-Edit. Not only is it easier, and easier to see what you're doing, but it can do a few things that you can't do on the unit itself. I downloaded X-Edit, what, 2-3 years ago? 4? Anyway, I had no problem with the download, although I think maybe I chose the wrong version the first time. But yeah, definitely go X-Edit, assuming it's still available.

I am looking for help creating a patch for upright bass. I tried an earlier one on this thread for fretless. It wasn't bad but if anyone has a more upright patch I'd appreciate it. The band is doing "All About that Bass" I need a similar sound thanks everyone. I hope Crystalman is still around to lend a hand.

Wondering, @Medford Bassman, if you ever managed a decent upright tone on the BP355? I see you are no longer using it, so maybe you've been able to get that sound with other pedal combos?

In my head, I'm thinking that a combination of Compression, maybe a little Pitch shift, or Reverb, and of course tweaking the EQ. On the BP355, might even employ the noise gate to adjust the attack and sustain? Thoughts, anyone?

(Playing style is equally important, of course. Rather than palming at the bridge, I'm playing up in the frets, with fingers at 45* - that seems to get that softer sound and slightly slower attack)

I never was able to get a patch I thought that worked well. I still say the BP355 is an awesome multi effect I went really simple and must used a BDDI for the last 7 years

Yep, BDDI is super simple and super effective. Essentially, I'm using the BP355 "stripped down" so that each patch is just one or two effects, not a big chain. Just playing with the EQ and the Amp/Cab combinations gives plenty of variety.

Anyway - still searching for a good effect combination for an upright sound!

Got one of these recently, but the amp/cabinet list isn't the same as what's listed in the manual and on here. The 15" and 18" speaker cabinets aren't available. The firmware is listed as 1.4. I tried to revert back to 1.3, but the cabinet/amp list didn't change. Instead of bass cabinets, it seems to have guitar cabinets. May drop back to firmware v.1.1 to see if that helps.

Good luck!

Recently, I needed a clicky, spaghetti western sound, so I cranked up the mids and treble on my amp. Sounded good.

Then, for our next trick, I used my Ric 4001 to record a song, but I forgot to change my amp settings. Sounded great! Like 70s prog bass.

My question is, how can I get that using the BP355 direct, without the amp? Any suggestions on amp or speaker settings? I'm looking for a Jon Camp sound (Renaissance) or maybe Greg Lake.

But does anybody ever look at this thread anymore? Does anybody but me still use a BP355?

Wake Up!
(No, not RATM, just... as @isaac42 said, is anyone listening?)

OK, my band is doing Spoon's Rainy Taxi. There's a very smooth bass tone there, that gets gritty when he digs in on the higher octave C, and in the chorus. I am assuming this is a function of gain, not distortion. Are there any similar tones in this thread? Anyone have their own? What settings do I play with to figure this out?

Fun to see this thread revived. I bought one of these around fifteen years ago when I wanted to start playing with effects. At the time I had almost no experience with pedals and thought that a multi-fx unit would be the way to go to learn about them. I also had exactly zero understanding of what amp and cab modeling meant. It ended up being too much for me to deal with since I really had no idea what I was working with and promptly went back into the box for many years. I opened it up again at some point, combed through the manual and had a good time playing with the presets and looper, but eventually returned it to the box as my knowledge was still too limited to get much else out of it. Over the past handful of years I've been deep-diving into learning about all the gear beyond just the instrument that I never bothered with and have now sampled many pedals and am familiar with the scope of effects, etc. I plugged this thing back in, familiarized myself with the manual, and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had, already at my avail, one of the precursors to the current modelers/multi-fx units that I had recently been eyeballing.

Is there a fancy (and very useful) touchscreen? No. Is the signal chain limited to the predetermined path that Digitech programmed this unit with? Yes. And there are some other limitations, but overall the unit is packed with many, many great sounds and features. Some of the amp and cab sims sound pretty close to phenomenal. The software is still usable, and there's a 44.1 kHz audio interface. Is it top of the line? No, but still perfectly usable for home recording. Very glad now that I never got rid of this unit.

Interesting. I don't think I'd ever heard of Spoon before now. Lyrics have a threatening, "Run For Your Life" kind of vibe to them.

The bass tone I'm looking for right now is a lot like this:

Yeah, the lyrics are a little dark and desperate.

Ashes Are Burning has a similar type of overdrive when played aggressively. Seems to have a bit of chorus maybe? And I think you can hear an octave when it's just the bass playing at the beginning of the interlude.

I'm looking for that overdrive that kicks in when plucked hard. That seems to point to a gain effect, not any distortion. So the right amp/cab simulation will be a big part of that. I'll give the Hiwatt a try
