Dilemma, needs opinions. What would you do?

So here's the situtation:

Walked into a Long and McQuade today to browse. I'm usually on the look for interesting used gear (scored and Alembic f2b there last year), saw a few good basses: Sadowsky 4 string (really nice), couple of warwick thumb BO's (4 and a 5) and an ibanez BTB 6 (for $399).

But there was one bass that beat the pants off of all of them, a US Fender Precision in a creamy white with a tort pickguard and nylon tapewound strings. It had everything, it growled with a warm round bottom end and a very comfortable neck. It was amazing and i've been thinking about it all afternoon.

I have 6 basses already and a 7th on the way. Although I could just buy the bass, I have a lot going on financially and I would feel irresponsible.

The only bass I would consider getting rid of is a Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn 5 string (sunburst with maple fb) in absolute dead mint 10/10 condition. The fender is $899 and the Lakland was $1249 brand new. I don't know what the store would do in regards to trade in value.

I'm going to go back in a couple days with the lakland to see what they would offer. But I want to get some opinions from the TB community about the potential deal and get some feedback about what the value of the Lakland is.

It's also worthwhile to mention that the Lakland was a gift from an ex gf and it's been bittersweet to hold onto (hence why it has not been played much).

Here is my current stable: 2 vintage precisions, a warmoth p-bass, a parts jazz, a warwick thumb 5 BO and a lakland Joe Osbourne (with fralins) and the upcoming Gibson T-bird

I appreciate that but unfortunately I love me the warwick and my parts jazz would not fetch anywhere near what its worth to me.

The Lakland is the only one that i see as disposable atm.

I think instruments are totally emotionally linked. The emotion it creates in you can make you write better songs.

I would have no problem ditching a great bass if it reminded me of a bad time in my life. I'd avoid the trade option though, they won't give you nearly enough coin for what it's worth. Might be better to list the Lakland, sell it, then buy the bass. If the P isn't there, you'll still have 6 other basses to fall back on.

Which bass makes you feel better when your playing it?

If it's the JoBo, then keep it, if it's the PB then trade the JoBo.

I recently sold my own JoBo5 to get another brand and haven't regretted it a bit, as I never really bonded with the Lakland.

Thanks for all the feedback. I've listed the JOBO for sale privately along with some other gear and i'll see what interest.

I'm always hesitant about selling an instrument but i'm excited about the precision. I'll keep everyone posted.

You do what you want to really. It is good though that yes you really want this bass, but know your financial situation enough to not just dive into it and be more in money trouble/need later. I would consider what they are willing to give to you for your Lakland as well.

They'll give about half to 60% of what they think they can get for whatever you trade in, so don't expect an even trade. Most places want some cash in the deal.

I agree....keep the Lakland!

you MAY be able to trade for the Warwick and the Parts bass...

they would not do a straight up trade for the JO5....an end user may but NOT a dealer. that is about what they would sell it for and they need to make a profit.
