Question: I am seriously considering ordering a Combustion 5 in trans white. However, I have seen NG2's for sale for decent prices and I've read/heard that they can easily be converted to a Combustion-like pickup configuration because of the body routing. Is this true, has anyone done this? The NG's have an alder body and the Combustions ash (and the preamp is different), but how big is the difference really?

Unfortunately I'm not. I'm sitting at 4 Dingwalls right now, one is an NG-2.

Physically, it's easy. Move the pickup, switch the pickguard. I can't remember if it's the same switch setup or not, but either way it's a quick edit to change that if you need to.

Sound wise? Probably some differences. My Combustion v. NG are similar yet different. The preamp will be the biggest difference, since the DG is low, low mid, high mid and has some hairiness to it, and the EMG is a regular bass/mid/treb setup and a bit more transparent.

Just jump on in, I did!!! No issues getting used to the fanned frets and the quality of tone and consistency of feel is unmatched. You'll be wondering why you didn't do it sooner!

I read where you are playing non-fanned fretted basses. How is the adjustment from fanned to non-fanned and back to fanned?

Hey fellow Dingwallians. I could really use some advice about strings. I've had my NG-2 for a couple months now, but I'm really having a hard time getting a tone out of it that I really enjoy.

I found the Dingwall strings that came on it kind of thin sounding in the A, D, G, and markedly lower volume compared to B-E, so I swapped them out for a custom set of La Bella White Nylon Tapes. I still am not really hearing what I am hoping to hear, and the I'm finding I am frequently getting a nasty noise on my B string which I think is due to the string hitting a pickup. I know the La Bella tape wounds are a little floppy, but I got the larger gauge strings to try to address this, as well as lowering my pickups on that side quite a bit.

Tone wise, I'm finding it all very kind of nasal in the mids in my A-D-G, and the B-E are kind of boomy and lack punch. Not sure if there is something about the Darkglass pre-amp that I'm not quite understanding, but it's getting me down a little bit.

My favourite strings are the Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwounds, but unfortunately they do not make them long enough to fit the Dingwall, and I'm really curious if there is anything out that anybody can recommend that might be similar - flatwound feel with a roundwound tone, or if there is something else that I should look into.

I go back and forth on the NG3 and a Peavey USA Cirrus all the time. No problem.
For me, the ONLY adjustment was the upper note chords, and that just takes a bit of practice. I probably am not yet quite as fast on upper note chords as on the parallel fret bass, but getting close. Upper notes themselves, no problem.
