I recently joined the club when I picked up my combustion 5 string in April and now a new ABZ 4 string last week. Loving the tone of these Basses and I’m amazed at the playability even with the long scale. These Basses are quickly replacing my high end custom Spectors as my favorite players

That blue ABZ sure is pretty! And so is that purple ABZ!

Studio is almost done. It needs a little more room treatment, bass trap and area rug. We only use it for tracking bed tracks (drums and bass). We have a couple sessions planned over next few weeks. Dingwall is well represented so far - one or 2 more coming.

You put an NG pickguard on the Combustion? Interesting. I took the pickguard off completely.

I thought about that but I can’t stand the screw holes ... it was a x2 and I got a 3x upgrade kit and it came with the ng Pickguard

Such treatment is mostly for looks anyway so why not

I always wanted to try a dingwall 5'er (abz or combustion), but there are none here locally (KS) for me to try out. I primarily play 4's with a spector euro being my goto.

I have to admit, the 37" scale does scare me as I already find my euro to be about the limits of my comfort but I am curious if anyone here has experience with both and wouldn't mind commenting.

I have owned some great 35” scale basses, but never felt great with the extended length. The reach reducing pin at least on my Sklar makes it feel no different than my other 34” scale basses.

Somehow the screws don't bother me as much as putting a pickguard on that nice top. Here's my Combustion...



I'm in the process of finding smaller black flathead screws so it'll be even less noticeable.

I put the screws back in after taking the PG off. Came from the factory with 3X.

Personally I played 34" basses for 40+ years. I got some Dingwall 37's and had NO trouble at all playing them - didn't even notice the length at all. (Except for the killer tone that is!) I also tried several 35" basses (Mike Lull, Roscoe, MTD) - all beautiful basses, but I couldn't handle the 35" scale at all. Sold every one of them. I have since moved to 33" as my preferred scale (and I can't understand why it isn't more popular!). I can still make do on a 34", but I definitely prefer 33". But I am also still perfectly happy and comfortable playing a Dingwall 37" - there is some magic about the ergonomics of the design - whether it's the fanned frets or the overall instrument design or both, I don't really know, but it's totally comfortable even for this bassist who couldn't get along with 35" whatsoever. I suspect that the fact that the frets always align with the natural position of your fingers regardless of where you are on the neck is the major contributing factor to the "magic" of them.

If your good with a 35” scale Spector you’ll probably be more comfortable on a 37” Dingwall as mentioned above.

I currently have a 35” Spector and a few long scales for comparison. I do find the Spector to be less ergonomically refined even though the one I have is a gem.

The staggered bridge pieces put half the extra scale length out of play anyway, so the low B is really only as far away from you as a 35.5 inch scale length anyway. My Dingwall neck feels more compact than my 34-inch Squier super J. There is very little chance you'll even notice the difference.

I did forget to mention I was referring to 5-6 string basses but it should translate to 4s as well.
Also, the Spector I have is an NS5XL so again pretty apples to apples-ish

That would by my suggestion and solution too...screws in and 'invisible' pickguard. Otherwise I'd just do a nice well cut clear guard.

One of the reasons I've been excited to try a 32-35 super series. I've played the 34-17" basses exclusively for 15 years now, I'm super interested to see how it plays in relationship to my left arm and if that ends up feeling like I'm cheating.

I think you mean 35" - 32" (5-string) Super Series.
