I have the D Bird switch in my NG3. I love the middle pickup solo, but the “all three” option is kind of low-end overload compared to the other positions. It doesn’t sound bad by any means, but requires a volume/eq adjustment or it functions like a bass boost.

Personally I’d go 3x as neck/bridge is familiar and bridge/middle series is my favorite in most demos. I imagine I’d use those positions the most, though I’d miss the middle solo.

Was looking on BassDirect today, they say new NG finishes are coming April of next year. Apparently some kind of gold (the D-Roc gold maybe?) and a green one that isn't the Ferrari green.

I have an NG2 4 string that the previous owner made an NG3 with the Dbird option.

Personally, I don't find much use for it. The middle "P bass" and "MM" positions have been the most useful for me, followed by the bridge only position. I would imagine the Dbird position is more useful in a live setting where you might need more oomph. It has a noticeable boost in output, so depending on your needs it may be just the thing. I just find it not what I'm looking for tonally most of the time.

From a technical aspect, this looks like a logical imrovement over most designs, if , you must use one.
I think maybe his description explains why I have not liked the sound of even supposedly top class preamps.
Been passive now for several years despite having basses with redundant pre amps.

I'm curious if you considered going with either a black pipe or white pipe and decided against it, and if so why. I don't see any pipe in the photo, though it might be there. If it is not, if it were me, I would have a hard time seeing the dots in the daylight, because only half the dot is in the dark fretboard, and the other half does not contrast very well with the neck. For me, the black pipe would help with that because it shows up nice against the maple. Of course, you may be younger and your eyes may work much better than mine! LOL

So today was my first chance to try my new Combustion 5 with my band. I was in love with it before but wow, what a phenomenal instrument. Tone for days and a great ability to go from blending in to punching through the mix with a minimal change in input from me. Big compliments from all band members on both look and sound.
What a bass!!

Well to start, nope old eyes! I did give it some thought and truthfully I don’t have much trouble in the light, but dim and dark rooms are my nemesis. I chose to go solid to keep it looking much like it did originally.

Can anyone familiar with the imports say if there're any model inherent differences between the necks of the Combustion, NG, and D-roc? I know they're all maple.

Works great in my euro spector.
I'm under the impression it was defined in a time of mostly tweeterless cabs.
It's only 2 bands though, don't you need 3 in a combustion ?

I am ordering the ng2 to ng3 conversion kit for my 5 string. I am debating which rotary switch to order, ( 3X or D Bird). I need some input if anyone has an opinion on the differences in these two options. The D Bird switch gives you the option of all 3 pickups at once, but you give up the neck/bridge (jazz bass ) option and the Nolly "signature setting (middle/bridge in series) too. My main question, is the "all 3 pickups" setting on the D Bird switch worth giving up the other options on the 3X switch? I've heard it can be over bearing. Any comments would help in my decsio thanks.

I bought a 3 pickup Combustion last year and the owner and purchased both switches. It came with the 3X switch installed which was what I wanted. After a year of use I found I never used the Bridge/Middle series or the Bridge solo, so this weekend I switched it for the DBird switch, but wired it to go Middle, Middle/Neck parallel, Neck, Middle/Neck parallel in series with the bridge.

I found the Middle solo to be a nice complement to the Neck solo - a little less boomy and clear, but fuller than the Bridge solo. The all three sounded good to me - not overbearing, but super full. I didn't find any use for it this weekend, but will continue to play around with it.

I'd summarize my experience so far is this: if you want familiar settings - probably should go 3X. If you want to be aggressive or experiment, get the DBird. Or get both and play around.

Yep. It's that flat metallic gold you're seeing around, I believe also, the green has been described as a dark metallic forest green, though I haven't seen any pictures of it etc. I wonder if it's the same dark candy green I'm having my Super-P done in.

I love the black surround. I have it on my NG3 (maple/maple) and it stands out in light or dark pretty well. For the ultimate in 'large print for adult eyes' Luminlay even makes this obnoxious stuff:

There is no discernable difference between the neck profiles on my NG and my Combustion. I can't speak to the D-Roc.

I have an older 4 knob Combustion, so that would work great for me! I tend to prefer 2 band preamps, and I'd "blame" that on having a bunch of 2 band active Warwicks in the past.

I'm not too much of a knob fiddler, and my current setup is overkill for me. I typically boost treble a bit, sometimes bass gets a little bump. I feel the sweepable mids are too much. I'm more of a set it and forget it vs constant adjustment. The other aspect is I'd like some color from a preamp with that bass as it's much more mild. I do like that quality of it, but I use my NG more often because it has a bit more character.

I like the sound of forest green...and next year gives me enough time to pay off this white one.
