My wife is just getting used to the idea of me owning one two thousand euro bass, it will take a little while for her to be cool with me owning two...and anyway, I will need to actually see them before I know whether they're my thing.

Ah, see... it's a notion of expectations. My wife expects me to find a new Dingwall every few years. I don't believe she probably has an idea of what the cost range of basses are in general, though she understands that they're 'nice basses.' That's not for hiding anything just for her general lack of interest. She's also aware that some of the Dingwalls I bought previously are worth much more than I paid for them.
If not for C19, my wife had just accepted that I try to get 2 basses per year. I had some plans for 2020 that are on hold for the time-being.

Well, in all honesty that sucks but I hope for a rapid return and also for your income to return. Some are in even worse shape, and my heart goes out to all who are living with reduced capacity right now.
I at one point joked that maybe I'd have my Super-P for my return to stage when this was all over...and at the time that sounded outlandish, but it now seems more and more likely. I do see some acts stripping down and doing duo/trio stuff in small rooms but that doesn't really work for where we were in terms of band and even a few places (like a gig in Vermont) finally realized they couldn't cover the guarantee with reduced capacity. And that's without the consideration that a few of us are really uncomfortable in pretty much most if not any social situations right now.
...And I'm still blessed with a day job that's been 'at home' since March and will remain so in whole or part for the rest of the year.
Well I’ve been enjoying my NG3 5 string so much to the point where I started yearning for a 4 string Dingwall. Then I come across this on the classifieds and I may have made an impulse purchase haha.
Wow am I glad I did! I’ve always adored the look of T-birds but I’ve never been able to get on with them in my hands. I hated the balance on a strap, the feel of the lacquered up necks, the weight of the ones I’ve tried, etc.
This thing has the look I wanted with feel that is so much more preferable to me. The neck is super smooth and I’m in love with the profile of it. The strap button placement on the back was an amazing idea, it sits perfect on a strap. The 4 way pickup selector gives this thing so much versatility as well. I’m starting to become a Dingwall fanboy!

that thing was sooo tempting. Beautiful bass, great price and those finishes in person are insane. Congrats and welcome to the club..

Quick question guys, I ordered payson stainless steel strings last night for my dbird, they are .45 .65 .85 and .105. I play in standard tuning only. Are the E and A strings going to have way too much tension then? I didn’t see an option for a lighter gauge then that for stainless steel strings on payson’s website.
Yeah, that's a pretty heavy tension set. Going to String Tension Calculator ...
I'm not sure why many of the Payson sets have such heavy gauges.

It's not a knock on the Payson strings, but I've always been happier with less tension on my strings (more of how they feel with my right hand), I've tried a few sets and just not been able to get comfy with the vibe.
I am about to try a set of strings on my fretless as provided by Jason at FretNation that should be somewhere in between. I was looking for just a little more tension to bring my relieve back a little bit but not enough to be uncomfortable. I'll be interested to see how they end up 'playing'
I have a SS (I think) 5 string set that came with my ABI, that I'm not using. Just received some custom Paysons. I can verify they're SS and not nickel this evening, happily sell to you.
Honestly it's NBD. I've exclusively played 35" scale 5ers the last 15 years, and I'm MORE comfortable on the fanned fret setup than the 'traditional' neck/fret setup. Not even kidding. I've had my ABI 5 for about 3 weeks now, and I can play it by "feel" even better than my Lakland, which I've had since 2011. Crazy stuff. You really get used to it more quickly than you think. I for the life of me can't recall why I got rid of the first 'original run' ABII 5 I had probably 12-13 years go, except that it was kinda beat up, didn't have anyone locally who could set it up how I wanted, so moved onto Modulus for years.
But, yeah- I was kinda concerned about it too, especially paying for an Afterburner vs. Combustion/NG sig, but I'm extremely happy with the setup. Someone will happily buy it from you if you decide to sell it. They go immediately here, when priced right.
