Dingwall Owners Club

I'm sure I'll get over what could have been once it's in my hands. The amethyst photographs really well. Not sure how the resell holds up being wrong handed and all.

I noticed the green showed more on the combustions. Great instrument you've got there!

Lefty? THAT is a rarity. I can only imagine that that adds to the value.

Both Amethyst Burst and Whale Pool are great color schemes--bright and cheery with a definite "pop" to them. In contrast to the "death at sea" theme of my benthic blue (AKA Stormy Seas) baby:

Z2 Final Build.jpg

Despite my love for that bass, all this talk of lightweight AB models and the comment by @pravus that his ABZ "sings," makes that AB6 that I keep threatening all the more likely. I should just cowboy up and make a final choice on a contrasting happy color scheme and stop tormenting Billy with the endless stream of questions. (My "problem" being, as @singlemalt said, "But there are so many awesome finishes to choose from!")

I therefore hope to post something NBD-ish in about two years. Synchronize yer watches! (Well, at least those of us...youth-challenged...folks who still use things called "watches.")

P.S. Random useless data: My 2011 SJ5 is 8.3 lbs., and the 2014 Z2 is 9 lbs. even. In contrast, I have a 1990 Les Paul that's 10.1 lbs. But then that is a six-string.

I read a post here on TB, well, it

Yep, "Death At Sea", exactly what the fiddle players said to each other on the Titanic as she was going down...into the abyss color scheme of your bass~!

I have 2 NG-3 4-string basses that I bought specifically for drop tunings. One is tuned to Drop C (CGCF) and the other is tuned to Drop A (AEAD). The Dingwalls handle this extremely well. You will need to get the right set (gauge) of strings and set it up properly, but once that's done, they work great.

I’m curious what strings & gauges have you found work best for Drop A tuning ?

So this is the part that I really know nothing about and I'm about to look foolish (wouldn't be the first time). Are you saying that you buy another set of strings just for those tunings and keep the bass setup like that? Gosh, I would only have 1 Dingwall to work with. I only play a few tunes in B-E-A-D, so I would just tune down from E-A-D-G for those few songs. I know exactly how my current bass doesn't handle this so well, I was hoping, and I think from what I read here, that I maybe can 'get away with it' a little better when doing this on the Dingwall when said Dingwall is normally E tuned, right?
I would say yes you could get a way with it “better” on a Dingwall than many other basses but that is still a BIG ASK of any bass. If you use higher tension strings and go heavy gauge maybe 50-110 or even -55-115 and a lighter touch when tuned down you can make it work but it’s less than ideal.
That’s really a job for a 5 string or something like the Digitech Drop pedal or my preference the Line 6 HX Stomp which has a great pitch shifter than sounds pretty darn convincing digitally dropping tuning down 5 semi tones to B
Like scary good. To my ear the HX stomp sounds better than the Digitech Drop for this purpose but some people really like the Drop so there’s that option to look into.

For anyone that owns an ABZ (this is the lightest DW bass correct?) and a D-Bird/Roc/ Combustion
How do they compare weight wise?
Is it a big difference?

the ABZ is supposed to be the weight conscious Line but a P can be quite light and the D roc’s are pretty dang light.
There was a few PZs and if I recall they are crazy light.

of course adding electronics and layered wood.... even the gloss( I always forget... is it nitro?) can add weight.

I played an AB2 5 string for years with standard dingwall SS strings tuned to A standard. It worked quite well for my playing style but the setup was critical.
Dropping your whole tuning from standard to any drop on the fly without a truss rod adjustment I wouldn’t think would work very well but having it set up for lower tuning In general I’d think you’ll be fine, especially with a heavier gauge set.

Wicked showing on the whale pools and other bursts team.
The new finishes on the 2019 and up combustion’s are sick.
The amethyst probably being my fav
But the vintage most likely taking a close second. I’d be happy with the indigo, whale pool or black also!!! Lol.
As much as I like a maple board I think the PF looks crazy good with these basses.

The quilted veneer is definitely on my list of likables but I think the biggest sleeper finish is these bursts over the ash body. Anywho.....

The Dbird in a purple mood, it can also look as blue as the headstock, just depends on the light and angle. Very cool metallic finish.

That's another finish that I really want to see in person. I bet it looks stellar in different lighting and out in the sun. I've seen some images where the metallic bits come out a bit more and it just looks awesome.

I'm glad I'm not the only one filling up Billy's inbox. Several emails to him about my crazy ideas this year...

Did I miss your review of this bass? Curious mind wants to know....

Nah, I haven't put up a full on review yet. I've been playing it a lot unamplified. but have only plugged in twice since last night. I'll be spending some hours with it tonight in the loud-room. I've also threatened to set up my interfaces and do some samples with it. I won't be in a room with real live musicians for a good while, band/mix related questions may not be readily answered by my situation.

In the meantime, it was in my paws for about 9 or 10 hours yesterday, so I'd say that's a success.

Here's the problem - that much change in tuning will be hard for ANY bass to handle. I did some quick calculations using the tool at Stringjoy Guitar String Tension Calculator. Dingwall 4 string lengths and standard Dingwall gauges. Dropping from EADG to BEAD reduces total tension by about 43%.

StringScale Length (in.)PitchStringTension (lbs.)
1 - 42.8
2 - 36.9
3 - 45.8
4 - 41.5
Total tension: 167 lbs.

StringScale Length (in.)PitchStringTension (lbs.)
1 - 24
2 - 20.7
3 - 25.7
4 - 23.3
Total tension: 93.7 lbs.

I use D'Addario XLs from Fret Nation for AEAD - 145, 100, 75, 55. I wish the 145 was tapered on the ball end...that may drive me to try another string option eventually, but for now it's workable.
Ok thanks that’s about what I was considering , though wasn’t thinking I’d need that heavy in the A but maybe I should. I was thinking .130 but maybe I should up it.
D’Addario does offer taper wound stings. I’ve ordered them from fret nation before.

I tried a set of Fodera heavy strings from FN that was I believe a custom order that might slot you in somewhere in the middle, if you look at the bottom 4 strings of ths set. Had the tapered B as well.
