Oh? You’ve contacted them?Following up on some recent discussion, apparently Dingwall won't sell a P-tone pickup on its own.
Yeah. Apparently they only sell it as a package together with a new pickguard and new rotary switch.
Does anyone know of other pickup manufacturers that make a pickup in the shape of the FD-3N pickups?
Id push a little harder with that. That doesn’t make sense for the P tone. Perhaps check wording and push billy a bit more. I’m certain you can get the p tone individually.
Also, Nordstrand does make a p tone offering for a dingwall. You make have to buy the shell though. I think it’s a very nice sounding pup too from what I recall hearing in someone’s sample
I did push harder and haven't received a response yet. We were corresponding back and forth yesterday and since I "pushed harder" (though politely!) it's been radio silence. Of course this is all fine...I'm sure there are good reasons for not selling the pickup by itself. It just means that I'll have to look into other options. A bummer, but I'm in no position to tell them how to run their business. I'm not mad.
They are really busy in the shop and sometimes Billy(I’m assuming who your corresponding with) will have to seek answers from Sheldon or others and that may slow down his response time. I’m certain you’ll here back with some news but sometimes email response does lag depending on the day to day goings on there. Believe me.... I’ve hassled them enough in the past!

I’d say the P tone is the most common individual pick up request they get.
I've bought a P tone by itself, and another P tone with the pickguard, which only made sense for the Super P 5. Used to be just an online store item.
One was a drop in for an AB-1. The other was the split pickup for the Super PJ5, which didn't come out for a while after the Super J 5's were released, and predated the Super P's.
Meanwhile, it's worth playing around with the series/parallel wiring thing. Changing the pickups to series is easy and easily reversed if you don't like the results. Or, you could add a switch or two. Moving to series is a few steps in the P tone direction, and might even get you close enough.

I put one in the neck position on my first Dingwall, a five-string AB-I. I think you'll like it.
All communications with the shop had ground to a halt due to my incessant questions. Fortunately for everyone (but especially Billy), The Order is nearing the deposit stage.
One thing I haven't fully established is how well the satin finish on the ABZ wears over time. Does anyone with both satin and gloss finishes have any thoughts on the comparison? My two gloss basses barely show anything after almost a decade, but then I baby them. Thanks!

The satin finish on my ABZ looks pretty good for 7 years old but I play mostly with a pick these days. My previous ABZ was showing some wear, not a lot but some, around the area I would rest my thumb after 3-4 years of heavy finger style use, I was playing 20-30 hours a week on that one at the time. So the answer is ymmv as it depends on how much you play and how you play.
Thanks! Was there any body wear from just general contact, or was it confined to anchor points? I don't mind some thumb wear, but overall fragility would be an issue.
