Congratulations on your cool new bass. I love the lightness and contrast of the wenge in the neck. I have a pair of super fatties in my (ash/maple/pau ferro) SJ-5. I run them in parallel with the glock set flat. It's a nice, punchy, full-range sound with a woody mid-range.

I feel like that Super-P is basically the red twin to my green one.

It’s pretty darn close. It looks black often but a little light can really exposed what’s hiding in the darkness

Regardless, it will be the very first time I've played a Super J... or any Dingwall at all for that matter!

Despite living in "music city" I've never seen one of these show up in a shop around here. And when they show up online, they're usually gone in a matter of minutes. But I'm a sucker for fiesta red, and you only live once, right?

Hey guys, quick question, do you use strings specifically made for your Dingwalls or can you use off-the-shelf strings?

The Super J that I have coming has the shorter side of the multiscale being 35" - 32", so I wasn't sure if I needed the Dingwall strings or if I could get away with some DR Pure Blues, or D'Addarios.

You should be able to use plenty of other sets. Do note that since many sets are sort of 'balanced' for parallel fret instruments you may have some hunting to find sets with gauges you like, or you can make up some custom balanced sets in a few places.

You can get away with some off the shelf strings as a few do around here but just watch your tension on them.
Payson makes a set for the supers now as well as the the dingwall strings.

Other strings certainly fit, but as has been mentioned, tension and balance might not be ideal.

I've found that Dunlop Super Bright nickels work well on my Super P5. TI Jazz Flats were also nice. I've got a set of La Bella Low Tension Flexible Flats to try out soon, too.

Interesting. I like the super brights on my Spector and have a few sets kicking around I may try.

I have used D'Addario XL's, DR Low Riders and Dingwall's on mine. They are currently sporting the XL's and they work fine.

A while back I did the tension math on GHS Balanced Nickels on a 4-string Super and it worked out pretty well. The medium gauge was closer in string-to-string tension than the light gauge. This is all on paper since I haven't yet received my Super J to try these strings on it. They're my go-to string for all of my current single scale basses so I'm eager to try them on my incoming Super J.

I liked those on my Warmoth Jazz, I think the lack of options for B strings is the only reason I haven’t tried them in my Super P5.

I’m really hesitant about the La Bella Low Tension flats as the low B is only .118, but we’ll see how they are soon.

Not sure about other folks, but it aches me to hear people talk about loose or flabby B strings, or on the other side, too tight. I’ve especially found that the D string in common prepackaged sets has far more tension than the other strings with G following next. I started calculating tensions and ordering individual strings. Never had issues again.

I just put a new set of XL's on my Super P5 and they sound good, but I find the B-string sounds just slightly muffled. (Interestingly, the same set sounds fine on my Super J5). I am going to try a taper ProSteel B-string and see if that helps. I know I will be mixing nickels with stainless steel, but I tend to like my lower notes zingy, especially the E and B.

So EMG is making me my 5 string JCS Jazz Bass pickups. It will take them 2 weeks. My pickguard guy sent me this today that he made for me. It fits perfect and the pickups will too. The moon and stars finally aligned for me so I can make my mods without wrecking my Dingwall. I do not have 1 ounce of artistc drawing know how in me at all. If anyone doesn't like the curve on the left, how it kinda goes stright down, perhaps you can show me a sketch of your idea for a new flowing curve and I can give it to him for when he makes all his cuts on the black carbon fiber.

Gosh, your right! I had to look that bass up to see what you meant. i never knew.

On my Super P 4: TI jazz flats, DR Pure Blues .040 VW, GHS boomers .030, DR Hellborgs, D’Addario XLs....tons of choices. If you have a favorite string set it’ll probably work on a Super 4.

Gets a little trickier with the five strings finding a B that fits just right. Sometimes the bridge screws need to be shortened for fat, non tapered strings.

Payson and Dingwalls are always a winner.
