All the options really do add up quickly, I would have loved to do a buckeye burl top on that one but the cost was just beyond my comfort zone. Especially as a lot of it would have been under the pickguard.

I think the ash is very smart looking, and it's traditional, like the Super itself. Maybe the buckeye would have popped a bit more, but the bass looks great as is, and it sounds the same to anyone in the audience.

If you are curious, you may be able to find a date on the underside of the pick ups if you pop one out. I’m not sure if they were dating them on this vintage

Jacob is 100% a Darkglass guy. Watch any of his other videos and you'll see/hear it. You could achieve most of his tone with a Darkglass X7 and impeccable technique.

Jacob has suggested a tutorial on his signal chain and processing might follow. He had some kind of multi unit, I'm not sure if he mentioned the make and model. But there was some cool stuff going on. I noticed the split in distortion levels at different frequencies, more fuzz and snarl on the top end, but the bottom had much less, a surprisingly clean (ish) low end. I've always wondered how these guys get great definition and punch with all that distortion. Distortion seems to suck the bottom out of my bass.

I've had a number of Darkglass pedals come and go. The Alpha Omega Ultra was my favorite, mostly for the excellent clean eq.

I've had the impeccable technique on back order for years. One day, maybe, it'll show up.

Just a heads up for you Dingwall lovers...

I'll be listing my wonderful, mint condition Super J in the classifieds pretty soon. I've been struggling with this decision for a bit, but while I love everything about this bass, I'm just not bonding with it for some reason.

I recently got a killer Roscoe that has become my main player, and this Dingwall is just too freakin nice to be sitting around in its case all day.

Keep an eye on the classifieds for more photos and details.

Beautiful. And I know from experience that your picture didn't really do justice to the depth of the finish or the flame.

Question. Are those the original knobs? I think that bass was made when they were still using off-the-shelf knobs.

I think it's earlier. By 2008 they'd moved to round pickup shells. This also has the BluEQube but the v1 of the knobs (thinner diameter than the current ones). I'd guess it's 2006-2008 though could be earlier with changed out knobs, since a lot of us did that when they first came out.

Those knobs are stock and I would second the guess of 2009. Here is my old AB4 - left the shop in 2009. From Dingwall:
It was called an AB4 at the time. Natural finish, Alder body, five piece maple neck, wenge finger board. 7lb/8oz. It shipped 4/22/2009.

AB1 4-string...there has never been an "AB4" model. The other bass shown in this thread (flame top, honey amberburst) is earlier than the one in this listing by 4 years. Up to the release of the shop made knobs in 2006 the flat-top plastic knobs were stock. Another good tip off for the era is the BluEQube toggle switch (which disappears in 2008).

That bass IS interesting for another reason though...It has the old square pickups rather than the Round ones. I wonder if they had a backup of 4-string sized pickups at the time and held off on moving to the rounded shells. I do know they'd moved to the rounded-end shells well before 2009 on the 5 and 6 strings.

Oh, good call on the switch. I missed that. I was just pointing out those pickups were used in 2009. @goldendomer04 just email your serial to Dingwall and they should have a build date. Inquiring minds want to know.

I assume the pickups are 'hold overs'. I also have a set of 4-string pickups that are the rectangular ones that the shop provided me as NOS back in 2016.

If so, I think you're right that they switched the 5-strings over sooner because they ran out of pickup shells faster. They were making very few 4-strings at the time. It would make sense that they had more spare parts lying around. It was possible they didn't even get rounded 4-string shells at that time.

Jong had this AB2 in his shop in 2008:

So somewhere in 08 there was a shift. Also, there was a Z3 at NAMM 08 that had super fatty pickups with curved edges too.

Here is an AB2 6 string though that's 2009 with squared pickups.

Also, note that this one has the wider v2 knobs...
