Has anyone mod'd (switched out) their SJ5 Preamp for a John East? To my ears, the active treble on the Glockenklang 2-band is a little too high for my taste. I have a Tone Capsule on my Spectator, which has lead me to ponder different options for my SPJ5.

Any user reports as of yet on the D-Roc 5-String or the limited edition Rob van der Loo Hellboy that is now shipping? I have an initial impression but would like to see others.

I'm in the 2nd batch for my D-Roc 5, but I'm really interested in your initial impressions if you would like to share.

The beautiful thing about the glockenklang is that passive tone control on the treble. Usually I find the treble sits pretty flat these days otherwise

Yes! I used a John East MMSR stingray preamp, the East/ACG Tone Control module (plug and play!) from Best Bass Gear, and a 6 way rotary from Fret Nation. IMO these mods tap into the full potential of this bass. Tons of tones and flexibility.

I just removed the Darkglass from my Z2.5 and replaced it with the Nordstrand 3-band.

The Darkglass had a definite sound, and as much as that is a very cool sound - I really like the passive tone of my bass and I wanted something a bit more "true".

With the EQ knobs centered, the Nordstrand sounds almost identical to passive mode.
There is a slight brightness boost due to the buffer counteracting capacitive loading, but the basic EQ shape is the same, and there is a trim-pot to ensure that the volume levels between passive and active are consistent.

I still play the bass passive 75% of the time, but when it's time for a song that needs an EQ'ed sound, I just dial it in, hit the switch, and go.

Alan/Skelf has been producing them in batches for the past year or so. I got a couple late last year. Last I heard (August) there was another batch on the way. The batches do tend to sell out not long after they are released. If you haven't already, I would contact him to see if you could buy/reserve one from the current batch or to see if he's planning to do another.

Someone in the thread was talking about wanting one around this month, and Alan seemed to think he'd be OK. But if you've already talked to him and they're indeed sold out and shelved again, that's a bummer.

I have an EQ-02 that I think I am going to put into my Stradi Fretless. I don't want to put one in my Z3 as I am really happy with the Darkglass pre but I have wondered about EQ-02 and Dingwall. I really love your Alembic like dual filter pre idea (I had a Series 1 in the past), very cool to combine with a Dingwall. Were you thinking dual outputs?

At this time just a single output. I half thought about going dual, but, I don't want to make THAT big of a mod to the body, and since the stereo jack is already used for power/switching, can't really go down that route with it. It should be VERY nice as long as the pickups play nicely with the pres.

Talkbass is incredibly unfortunately restrictive from allowing experts and people with tons of real hands on experiences from sharing their wisdoms with us. Big part of reason a lot of folks, myself included, curb our time here (or, have ceased all together).

Mostly just to make another dollar for Paul, too.

I'm completely surprised by how thin the body is and how light I perceive it to be. I honestly would have expected it to be way, way heavier.

Congrats! Pure awesomeness. I also joined Canadian team and Dingwall team in general a week ago with my ABZ 5 and I can’t be happier.

So after a week I feel like totally bonded with my new ABZ 5. For me it’s obvious cause I just can’t put it down and keep playing even unplugged. Not all my previous basses gave me this feeling. Another amazing thing I’ve started to notice is that my first Dingwall stopped my GAS to other basses and brands totally. I stopped scrolling down reverb.com sales and TB classifieds! Wow. This costly thing saves me some cash in the end! Good move. And as I am mostly a passive bass guy these days the only Dingwall basses I look towards now after buying my ABZ are D-Roc’s 5ers. Thank you Sheldon! p.s. hang on…I forgot about Super series passive ones, probably next year plan
