The only reason I let it go is totally superficial: I prefer basses with solid color finishes!

I am not a fancy top person, either. Too much of a statement bass for my humble being. But this one fell from the heavens at the right moment, from the right seller, at the right price, and located in the US not too far from me. It seemed meant to be. Now the hunt for a Super P4 begins.

Of course, it's an adjustment. I play a Fender CS Precision mostly, but have a 5 string PJ as well. I've heard of the Dingwall fanned fret thing for years and recently took an interest. @IvanBassist videos got me to really liking the sound of the Super P.

Last week, I was in Orlando with the family and made a trip to Bass Central and took my pedal board and headphones. They let me play every Dingwall variant they had on the wall and it did not take long to realize that the longer scale B and E strings were pretty awesome sounding and the even tension up through the G string was very cool. I walked out thinking I needed a 1) long scale 5 and a 2) Super P 4-string.

The next day, up pops this Afterburner 2 for sale, nice dialogue with the owner/artist, and we reached a deal. The AB2 arrived Saturday and was very impressive right away. The light weight, the comfortable hang, the neck is so easy and comfortable, build quality, the pickups are not super aggressive as was my concern. I played the AB2 at church the next day and it had that nice clarity and piano-like supporting fundamental. I'm adjusting to the fret system but it's not a big challenge. Overall, this Dingwall instrument is probably the nicest built, sounding, and playing instrument I've ever played and is exceeding my expectations. And the 3-band EQ may actually be useable. Very happy with my choice. My former 34" scale PJ5 was sold the next day to an artist in Nashville.

NBD: Just joined the Dingwall scene with this 2015 Afterburner 2.
I think it sold previously here on TB in 2020 and 2023.

I had an NG2 a couple years ago and liked the bass but just found the tone too aggressive and a bit thin so I sold it. I later saw some videos from Brazilian groove master Claudio Rocha which showcased some amazing tones these basses can deliver. Any bass seems to turn to butter in his hands and I don't have this superpower, so when the NG3 was introduced I considered what reasonable mods could be done to voice it more to my preferences. What I wanted was more meat and a little less slice from the pickups, a passive tone control to better manage the upper mids and treble, and a 6-position rotary switch with middle solo instead of bridge solo (which I never use). After some emails with Dingwall tech support, I ordered a matte celestial blue 5-string NG3 and a pair of SFII neck and bridge pickups from John Fox Bass. I really like this color and John installed the SFII neck and bridge pickups for me for a reasonable fee before making a video. The added neck pickup and SFII in neck and bridge was an immediate game changer for me versus the NG2 for the more traditional tones I favor. The neck is very comfortable to play with good string to string balance and no dead spots.

I ordered a 6-way middle solo custom rotary switch from Fret Nation, a stacked 250K Noble volume/tone pot from BestBassGear, and a black nickel 6mm/8mm stacked concentric knob from Thompson Guitar. This knob was an excellent match with the existing knobs.

A local tech I work with installed the 6-way switch and stacked volume/passive tone according to drawings and info I provided. Note: The hot output goes to the active/passive switch, not straight to the jack as shown. Everything works as designed and I am thrilled with the tone, feel, and versatility of this beautiful instrument. The passive tone complements and completes the Darkglass preamp and works in both active and passive modes.

Here’s the link to the video John made. I’ll make one when I get some time. There are such a wide array of tones I’ll just try a few passive settings going straight into a Scarlett interface. The difference is more than can be heard on this one video.

Oof... I love my DROC but after looking at the beauties you guys are showing I think it needs a Z brother sooner rather than later.

I bought my first Dingwall, a D-ROC, at the end of 2020, late December. JFB emailed me right away to thank me for the purchase and let me know he was shipping it that day. In the back and forth emails, I had mentioned that I wanted a Ferrari Green NG3 6 when those became available, and before the first day of contact with him, I’d put down a deposit on that one. A week later, I was already thinking about making the plunge on a Canadian Dingwall. Six months on, my FG NG3 came in, and 2 months later I had my deposit down on what was eventually specced out as a Z3 6-string.

Don’t even ask what the Dingwall collection looks like at this point.*

I had 2 NDD’s back to back. I’m stoked beyond belief. Maybe, just maybe, the fiver will finally take hold and not get flipped this time.
Yesterday was AB1 day. Today was Ltd D-Roc day.

The yellowish lighting is not ideal. Gonna take some better pics in some sunshine asap.

No I had this one on order, the blue one went as I have other bills to pay and I’m a bigger fan of the long scale 5s vs the medium.

Hello! Need your advice and wanted to get insights from this forum. Looking to buy my first Dingwall and I’m torn between these two. I’m leaning towards the blue one because I love maple boards. And a more simplified controls as it is passive. But how different do the pickups of these two differ? I’m currently using a Lakland 55-94 and mostly using it in a jazz style config, that is pretty much the kind of sound I go for. Can any of the two do something close or similar?

Also one of the reasons I consider getting a Dingwall is that they are both 3.6kg and heard Canadian builds are amazing. The stores are faraway from me which is why I can’t give them a try. I don’t play metal music and mostly play in a function band if this helps.
