Dingwall Owners Club

NBD: Just joined the Dingwall scene with this 2015 Afterburner 2.
I think it sold previously here on TB in 2020 and 2023.
Very nice.....getting acquainted.....thanks to @MikoFX for getting me pointed in this direction.

Nice score. I’ve always admired that one. She’s a looker.

Sure is pretty! What're the full specs on that one?

I've always wondered why some Dingwalls seem to trade hands somewhat often. There's a couple Zs that you see go up for sale every few months or maybe a bit over a year apart. And at least one particular AB1 and a wrecked Combustion, though the Combustion makes sense because it's a basket case and I'm surprised it hasn't just become a Ship of Theseus at this point.

The blue one with that... Interesting paint?

Oof... I love my DROC but after looking at the beauties you guys are showing I think it needs a Z brother sooner rather than later.
If ya love what ya got, rock it! Zs are nice, but, once you're at that level, I kind of view it as more lateral moves than "upgrades". The specs are different, and yeah you can get more fancy and more $ into a Z, but, in terms of quality and approach, an AB and the Z are the same. Just depends on what shape and options you want.

I’d speculate :
walnut body
Maple contrast layer
Camphor burl top

wenge/wenge neck

FD3s
Glockenklang.

I think sometimes the ones that bounce just end up in the wrong hands… we do have some chronic gear swappers amongst us. No matter what they have on hand.
There there are a few duds for sure like you mentioned. That Dark blue Z on reverb right now gives me bad vibes

I am biased on my feelings towards this one for sure.

here’s its super sibling.

I had an almost perfect ABZ... But it was blue and I just couldn't get over the color. My DROC isn't going anywhere but the next time I see an ABZ that gets my gas going I'll jump on it.

Not sure what you were playing before but how do you like the extended scale?
Of course, it's an adjustment. I play a Fender CS Precision mostly, but have a 5 string PJ as well. I've heard of the Dingwall fanned fret thing for years and recently took an interest. @IvanBassist videos got me to really liking the sound of the Super P.

Last week, I was in Orlando with the family and made a trip to Bass Central and took my pedal board and headphones. They let me play every Dingwall variant they had on the wall and it did not take long to realize that the longer scale B and E strings were pretty awesome sounding and the even tension up through the G string was very cool. I walked out thinking I needed a 1) long scale 5 and a 2) Super P 4-string.

The next day, up pops this Afterburner 2 for sale, nice dialogue with the owner/artist, and we reached a deal. The AB2 arrived Saturday and was very impressive right away. The light weight, the comfortable hang, the neck is so easy and comfortable, build quality, the pickups are not super aggressive as was my concern. I played the AB2 at church the next day and it had that nice clarity and piano-like supporting fundamental. I'm adjusting to the fret system but it's not a big challenge. Overall, this Dingwall instrument is probably the nicest built, sounding, and playing instrument I've ever played and is exceeding my expectations. And the 3-band EQ may actually be useable. Very happy with my choice. My former 34" scale PJ5 was sold the next day to an artist in Nashville.

Congratulations! I had the pleasure of enjoying this bass from 2020 to 2023. It's a perfect specimen and I'm sure it'll treat you very well.

Thanks for reaching out! Nice to know. Not a "dud" being passed around, then? LOL.....
DEFINITELY not a dud being passed around. I loved that bass. Those pickups with the Glock preamp, and the amazing weight/balance of that AB2 make it a total grail bass. At one point this bass was featured on Dingwall's site because of the gorgeous woods involved.

The only reason I let it go is totally superficial: I prefer basses with solid color finishes! I ended up finding an AB1 5-string with similar specs in Ducati White Pearl. So that white AB1 joined my Fiesta Red Super PJ 4 and my blue colorshift ABZ 4-string as the Dingwall Trio of Doom.
