Which brings to mind.... Anybody here using flats on their Dingwall?

That makes sense with the 35" length. I was curious about the 37's.

I’ve run TI flats on every Dingwall I’ve owned. Also, Payson flats on my Dbird and AB-1. Super P has TI flats. I do love the TI flats, the price doesn’t even slow me down. They last forever. The bass might get sold, the TI flats stay.

Now, they don’t all wear flats all the time, but each has a set of flats. Or a couple sets that can go on either the Dbird or the AB. One of the three will always have flats on it. Some days, only flats are going to do. Best to be prepared.

Currently, the AB has Payson nickel rounds in light gauges, (excellent, I’ll be doing this again!) the Dbird has TI jazz rounds, (jury is still out, first time with TI JR) and the Super P has TI flats.

All of them have sets of DR Pure Blues VW .040. A set of DR dragonskin nickels .040 is inbound to try on the AB and Dbird.

Pretty much any standard strings will fit the Supers.

Now days there are plenty of choices for the longscales.

I’ve got a string habit, the list is long.

FretNation and Payson are my go to string dealers.

Understatement?! I have 'flirted' with flats, but always come back to a good round-wound. For years, nothing satisfied my ears but stainless steel. The nickel rounds I tried seemed to have something missing. A few years ago, my perceptions changed (same instruments, different strings). Now, nothing satisfies like nickel rounds, especially Paysons. I do concur on the DR Pure Blues - very nice on your Super.

I agree about the TI flats they are my favorite string, I have rounds on my Corvette but find the feel too light.
How do the TI flats go on the Super J as its 32" on the G string?

I still have the flats that came in my used Aquaflake D-Bird on it. I was going to change them, when I get around to swapping the pickups.

I have had mixed results with flats in general and for me, it was a total fail on my SJ (GHS Precision Flats).

I love LaBella Black Tapewounds but I only have them on a short scale fretless. I certainly think about putting a set of LaBella Blacks on my SJ but IDK, I have been mostly SS Roundwound strings since I started playing and that mostly feels like home.

I love their 4 strings sets but never tried their B string. I've read mixed reviews on that one. I wonder if the NG2 nut would need to be widened for that 136 gage.

Just got word back from Dingwall about the Alnico P-Tone. There is no FDV pickup shape for it at the moment. I will ask Sheldon during the Guitar Summit if that is in the plans or not.
Nevertheless, I will order one for my Super P and do a comparison side by side video of the Neo & Alnico split P-pickup

Payson Flats are worth waiting on if it's not infinity...they are a direct drop in replacement for stock, or close enough that only minor tweaks to your setup are needed. I have only one set or I would send you an extra set. Like most flats, I prefer the way they sound after break in. I have had the same set on my AB1, NG2, and Z2, but my favorite platform is still the AB for flats.

TI flats will work, but you need to work with a dealer to verify you get the correct lengths on the long scale. It's going to require shorter intonation screws, depending on how low you want your action. Non-tapered strings in general require more involved setups. That's fine with me if you found your sound and stick to that string, but I like to change up frequently.

The TI JF B string works but might need extra attention when setting up.

None of the TI flats are tapered at the ball end. To get the string low enough at the bridge, I needed shorter cap head screws. Not a big deal as these are available at a well stocked hardware store, maybe $1 each. This is on the AB and Super type bridge.

I did not need to work on the nut.

While the standard TI five string set works on the Super series, for the longscale Dingwalls, you need to order a mixed set of lengths. Contact Jason at FretNation, and he will get you set up.

It was worth the extra effort.

Yeah, I wonder what a short scale Dingwall would be. 35" - 32" 5-string? Or would that overlap the Super series? Maybe 34" - 31".

I would imagine it would go from medium scale to short. 32" - 30". Maybe somewhere between 28.5 - 29.75 on the short side.

First gig on my Combustion this evening...

Was going to take a different bass actually, had realized the Dingwall shipped with pickups WAY too high. Ugly result with my heavy hands. Our boy @gustobassman hooked me up with a fantastic lil guide at the midnight hour. After a last minute surgery, I was getting big round notes from her just how I was wanting. Off to the show she went.

Oh. My. Goodness. Best stage sound I've heard with this band. Won't be reaching for my jazz anytime soon after that I suspect.

I tried a Combustion at the store yesterday and it really impressed and surprised me. It has a surprisingly nice Ray-ish sounds in one of its PU configs (neck+middle I think). I liked the versatility of tones available with all the PU configs, from Jazzy to P-like to MM-ish.

I didn't get to try the NG signature model, tho. How would y'all say they compare sonically? I'm seriously considering splurging on one of them as my first 5-string.
