Does the tone control only work while in passive? I was trying to figure out how to add a tone control to my Z3 with the DGTC, 6 way FretNation selector, and s/p switches a while back, but eventually gave up

Pretty cool mods, either way!

And a matte black NG3 pickguard? I've been keeping an eye out for one of those.

Me too! I would settle for one without the NG cutouts, but again, where's it from?

Seems to be a whole lot of unobtainium on this bass. Wonder what the past owner's hookup was...

There was a factory run that had them.
My purple NG came with one straight from the shop.

I don’t know why. The edges are nicely beveled too, including along the racing stripes. I definitely preferred it to the carbon fiber look ones.
Maybe it was just a supply chain thing?

Thank you for dtawing my attention to this. I had not opened the tool kit yet, because the set up was great right out of the box. I had no idea that the strap locks came with it. Installed them right away. Feels great to lock it in the back of the bass at the bridge side.

Let me answer a few questions about that custom NG3 that were asked.

The knob layout is different than what I said. The stacked knob bottom has the passive tc. The passive only works in passive mode (pull up on volume knob).

In regards to the pick guard, it was painted (the bass was a custom refinish as well). You can actually see some paint wearing away to reveal the carbon fiber look above the pickups in the picture below.

The irony is it is a ton of versatility that I do not use. I either play with the neck and bridge pickup on in parallel or just neck by itself. Passive does sound good, and I love having a passive tone control if I ever needed to darken up the tone for something. I prefer my ABZ to the NG3 if using passive. The ABZ has the ash body and cuts through the dense guitar and loud drums better.

I will admit if my band toured all the time, I'd probably have a custom ABZ with the following: 2 pickup setup with P tone in neck (and just a dummy or unwired middle pickup because it is a great thumb rest). Passive with the 4 way selector. That is it. My DBird Custom has the 4way ABZ selector in it. I don't care for the settings on the one that comes with them. I do prefer the tone of the ABZ of my 3.

Painting it never even crossed my mind, I might have to give that try. I kinda like the racing stripes, but I don't want a shiny pickguard.

Just a reminder of how important string choice is. I was thinking about selling my DRoc because the tone just wasn’t hitting right. On a whim, I decided to order some Dingwall steel strings to replace the Stringjoys on it, and after the string change, the bass came to life. Tension is a little off so I have to do some setup adjustments, but now it is no longer on the chopping block. If you’re getting tired of your tone, a change in strings might be a good idea!

Very true, I’m enjoying the SIT Multiscale set a good bit since I first tried them. I want to try the new DR strings when available as well.

dude, you should try Payson strings out of Tx. If you like the dingwall steels give the paysons a go!!
