Please do and post your findings. My SP order hasn't entered productions as far as I know, so if there's a new pickup option I'd like to be as informed as possible... well... either that or I'll just buy an extra pickup and do my own testing :smug:

If you want, I can send you a raw DI track that I recorded for Felipe with the SP1. The alnico pickup sounds much warmer/traditional than the P-tone

By the way, I just opened the wrench tool kit of my SJ, because I wanted to give a tiny bit of bow to the neck and found that they included the other parts of the strap locks. I don’t know since when they are doing this, because my Super P didn’t come with them

Hey all, new to TalkBass and Dingwalls, so forgive me if this is the wrong spot to ask. I'm close to pulling the trigger on an ABZ 5 which looks to be in great condition at (what I believe to be) a decent price ($3800). The only issue for me is it doesn't come with a certificate of authenticity. Considering its a custom, shouldn't that be something that should stick with guitar through owners? I want to be absolutely sure of this deal before I drop that much money.

When I got my used ABII, it didn't come with any paperwork. I did reach out to Dingwall to tell me more about it (serial number) and it checks out.

But I understand how that could be not entirely conclusive and satisfactory to some.

I have two Canadian Dingwalls and neither had any paperwork. I custom ordered one of them.

Thanks for the response! Perfect, just the answer I was looking for. I couldn't find any results online about any paperwork/extra swag so that explains why. Last question- is 3800 a decent price for a 5 ABZ in 8.5/10 condition, or are there enough sales on here/FB marketplace/Reverb to justify waiting around to see if I can grab something cheaper?

For a used base model, I‘d find pretty high, actually - with the customs, it really depends on the feature set of the individual bass, though. Show us a picture or two, if you don’t want to submit a link?

Honestly not in love with the color... to me seems purplish on picture (which I'd love), but IRL it's just blackburst. Maybe I should hold off, especially if it isn't something that I'm completely in love with. If 3800 seems high, then I'll keep lurking, especially now that I've found this forum!

The finish is great (and has a purple-ish hue irl, imo) but on an ABZ it‘s matte, and it will be showing wear a few years down the road. Depending on you, that can be either pro or con, but it‘s something to be aware of.

Wenge neck is always a plus. Personally, passive is, too, but I don’t see the features adding up to the price as it‘s an older model - which is great if you might want to switch the old pickups in the rectangular style shells to EMGs, but not so great if you might be interested in Dingwall‘s own pickups, which are only made anymore with rounded shells. Also, it‘s not a 3X, which are more sought after.

I‘d top out at around 2400 in my currency.

Yeah, I'm watching it and the seller sent me an offer as well. I don't like it for myself at 38 but I don't know that it'll ever go as low as 24 with the imports selling for what they do.
