I admit Dingwall are a perfect and better alternative but for me at least the two American Standard Jazz and Precision have a special vibe which I have a lot of respect for that makes them both keepers, I could play my Fender Jazz with the lights off and see the word Fender spelled in the dark, I might be talking nonsense but those who know me well know that I don't keep idle basses in my house if they don't suit my needs or are surplus they get sold. I just couldn't part with my Fenders.

And I agree with the tone thing. It's the best P bass I have ever owned and I have had a ton of them. At this point, its an ergonomics thing. Not overjoyed to play it.

And I still have the Funeral Bass.

Ironically, I was going to do wenge/alder, but given my choice of transwhite, the recommendation was to do ash, no doubt because of the grain in the ash top.

I really am kidding. I am not the least bit concerned about the choices I've made. I did agonize over them, and no doubt more than I really needed to. But since the final specs went in, I have not lost a minute of sleep, at least not insofar as the tone, ergonomics and cosmetics of the bass are concerned.

Now PAYING for it. That HAS caused me to miss a few winks here and there! :D

Doing the same thing right now...agonizing over a few tiny spec differences, but i must have a Super P with the FD3 in it!

Tried to cut a deal on that AB 1 in blue but we are too far apart on a trade cash/deal.

They are actually trying to push everyone in the Ash body direction, more 'magic' to the sound according to Barry; the only alder build he recommended was wenge necked, like Nolly's Super P.

I may very well end up going the same direction as you, albeit WITH the FD3 ;), but we'll see how the cards fall once I spec it out over email with Barry.

It's definitely bigger sounding, and pairs really well with the P; apparently Sheldon and Barry are much happier with the sounds they're getting now with the FD3's on the Super J's.

I had my eye on that black and maple P/J that someone else here snagged and was planning on replacing the Super Fatty with an FD3 if I'd picked it up; Sheldon has no time to do that sort of the thing in the shop now with how many Canadian builds they have on order, but according to Barry would be an easy route for someone with the tools and knowledge.

I agree with SmallEQ. I don't feel my SP5 is lacking in any way and I think the fanned scale length helps to even things out across the strings. I also prefer the look of the standard P pickup configuration.
