It is a really nice pairing with the rest of my gear. Played my Z1 and F212 at the store. Had it cranked up a bit and I am pretty sure the sales guy soiled himself when I dug in on the B.

Dustin, best wishes for your family, do you know the sex of your baby or is it a surprise? It's really cool to have a bass that can age with a child, I got my '66J in '83, the same year my son was born, for that reason alone I will never sell it, even though I don't care for single coil J's. Still having your/mine/your SP5 five would sure make my wait easier, but I'm getting by with my Roscoe ;)

Has anyone else tried the DR "PURE" Blues? I just put a new set on my Super P and I really like them. They sound like stainless steel, but have the feel and warmth of nickels (which is their claim to fame). It really brings out the "P" in my Super P. Also, I was able to get a lower set up with them.

If these "Pure Blues" really do sound like steels, I may. No guarantees, though. I don't care for the tones of the nickels that I've tried.

I put this set of DRPure Blues on, just a few days ago. image.jpeg They were replacing a set of Dingwall nickel rounds I put on a couple months ago when I wanted to try stringing my Super P/j 5 E-C.

I wrote a short review a few posts back. I really like them. And my action is set lower than it has ever been. So low, I ground my saddle screws shorter to start my setup down on the frets. The neck relaxed to almost dead flat. Then, I slowly raised the C string until I could fret the highest notes without fretting out. I set the rest of the strings accordingly, and tweaked the intonation. I messed around with the pickup height and, voila, I couldn't be happier.

Now, this set up likes a very light touch, but still has tons of dynamic range. The only buzz is the open G string, where I get a tiny rattle. Not bad considering the nut was cut for larger strings.

Previously, I'd been running TI Jazz flats. B-G. TI's are my favorite strings, but before I cut up an expensive set of TI's for E-C, I thought I'd experiment with some less expensive strings. I wasn't ever really happy with the .136 B string on the Super P. It's fine on the longscales, but funky on the Super scale.

And before the TI flats, I'd run some DR nickel low riders. And DR Hellborgs. It's been a string quest since I got the Super J5. I don't get along with stainless steel, so it's been all about nickel and alloys.

The pure blues outer wrap feel like the nickel low riders, but the tension is much lower. Not quite as slinky as TI flats, but much softer than the Dingwall nickels. And there's yet another lighter set of Pure Blues available. I got a .030 C string.

At some point, I'll install the new TI set, E- C, but I'm pretty darn happy with the way things are playing and sounding now. Next up is a set of Hellborgs with a sunbeam C string. I really liked the Hellborgs on the SP 4, but they only come in four string sets. The Pure Blues might just be staying on, and I'm looking forward to trying the lighter set.

And, I finally snapped a picture of the latest fEarful 12/6 cube, sitting atop the first cube. May the Cube be with you!

They have that darker and slightly compressed sound of steels. The amount of harmonics seem to be rolled off a bit and that's what I like about them. At the same time, they have the feel and subdued string noise of nickels. After having them on my Super P for about twenty four hours, I can say I am totally digging them. My action is so much nicer and the tone is far more Precision sounding than I have experienced with the nickel steels I've had on the bass.

The final test will be at rehearsal tomorrow night.

Come to think of it, it may have been your review that made me check them out!!! Thanks for the tip! I have not maxed out my action lowering capability, but it's close! I am thrilled with the level of action I now have. BTW, I was also able to straighten the neck significantly as well. The relief is very slight and the bass just handles like a dream now.

I mistakenly referred to them as Deep Blues above. I shall correct my post, as dose are dem!
