Dingwall Owners Club

I had an AB1/5 a few years back. The best 5er I ever layed hands on. Sold it - not without regrets - to raise cash for a vintage Fender, thinking if I ever get a 5 string bass again, it's got to be a Dingwall.

So, yesterday I pulled the trigger on this one:

It'll arrive on Monday. A hard weekend lies ahead.

Beauty. I love the 'scroll holes' that Sheldon does!

Ah, not a flamed maple top. I guess you don't have to worry ;)
Heh, I know what you mean :D

Afterburner 1 6 string
3x pickups
Glockenklang 3 band pre
3x switches
Green to black burst
D-tuner on B

I don't have the order number or build number. I don't know if that's normally given out, but my dealer hasn't given me one. One thing I forgot to include what that mine is spec'd with a flamed maple top as well. So, if that one had a flamed maple top, it may be mine?

Spirit, I noticed that headstock picture there, is this your bass?View attachment 1009798

Yes, Sheldon and crew made it for me back in 2013. Blew me away when I first laid eyes on it. :woot: I haven't succeeded so far in capturing a good image of the whole bass to show the matching head stock. Natural light brings out the red hues in the finish. This is the 'glamour shot' before it left the Dingwall shop:

Awesome! I loved that look as soon as I saw it. It's simple, classy, and beautiful grain. Very nice!

Sheldon knows how to build a beautiful instrument! All I spec'd was the "Colaburst" finish, swamp ash body, and pau ferro board. I knew it would have a northern ash top because the bodies were chambered back then, but I did not expect this beautifully grained, book-matched beauty.

That's an understatement!

I'm actually fairly seriously looking into trading out my Afterburner for a Super J with fatties. Any thoughts on that configuration and tone? My other bass, as you can probably see from my picture is a fairly new PJ. I know I really love the "shorter" Dingwall scale, but I don't have any experience with the Super Fatty pickups.

I really like the tones this one delivers. According to Sheldon, the fatties are more aggressive than FD3's. I have not had an opportunity to play one of the newer FD3 equipped Super J's, so I'll have to take his expert word on the subject. The pickups on the SJ's with fatties are in the 70's position whereas the newer FD3 equipped SJ's are in the 60's positions. I prefer the tones this one delivers (woodier and warmer) more than I did my ash/maple SJ/P5:

Both active/passive with Glock pre's. The B and E strings on the SJ/P were so clear, they sounded sterile compared to the SJ5.

Apologies: I have not read all 709 pages of this thread. Search function is having trouble narrowing down my query. Perhaps someone here can help:

Is there an easy way to compare/contrast the features & differences between an Afterburner II versus a Z2 (or Z3)?

I realize all that info is contained in wonderfully excruciating detail on the Dingwall website, but finding it there involves jumping back and forth between so many separate pages that I'm having difficulty keeping it all straight!

Can someone give me the Cliff Notes comparison between those two models? Thanks.

They are very different basses. One is a hollow body, the other is not. The pick ups, electronics, body shape, bridges, tuners, preamps, and necks are all different.

Wow, that's a beauty also. Nice deep blue. Thanks for the info. I was able to find some videos earlier of a few Super J's with fatties and I really love the tone.

Wow. I had gleaned that the bodies were different ...and I suppose I might have noticed that the necks were different, although they seem to offer so many options that perhaps I got the impression that it was possible to wind up with identical necks on those two models ...but "pick ups, electronics, body shape, bridges, tuners, preamps" also?!?! I'm gonna need a chart!

Well, luckily, they have one right on their site

Dingwall Bass Specifications | Side by Side Comparison | Dingwall Guitars

Oh yeah, I've spent way too much time scrolling around on that page! It'd be cool if they did what a lot of the TV manufacturers do these days, allow you to select two different models with a "Compare" function so that you only see the models you're trying to compare and then you get your apples-to-oranges side-by-side chart on a new temporary page. I'll probably just email the folks at Dingwall.

Either that or a dealer. The site is slightly out of date too... I'm sure it's way lower priority over building new instruments!

The body shapes are different. The body on the Z2/Z3's are dual density (IIRC). The neck is thinner on the Z Series. The Z Series has a tilt-back headstock. The Z Series bridges are single saddles attached to a bass plate in the body. I think there are probably more wood options on the Z's.
