i'm pondering the spec for a super J build, so that's why i've asked. i owned an MTD 535 with a wenge neck for a while, and didn't care for the feel of the neck under my thumb. the grain felt very pronounced--but of course i'm used to the smooth feel of poly or nitro on maple.

at the risk of over-thinking it...that super P, the one i mentioned above, seems to have a wenge board. (mistook it for morado at first glance, but later compared it to another bass i know has morado.) it's very smooth and silky...so i was wondering if the _back_ of the Dingwall wenge neck would feel like that, too.

@Ewo - Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention, wenge also looks pretty damn good. Here are a couple of shots I took of the wenge on my 9-month-old SJ5 custom.

well, this Dingwall n00b is back, seeking advice! (and thanks again, all who commented on wenge v. maple necks. they were helpful.)

my good experience with a super P has convinced me to add a super J to my stable. i've got a sense of the time frame and price of commissioning a new build, and that's an option. i've also nosed around a little bit in what there is of a used market and stumbled on a 2005 super J pretty close to what I'd spec new.

the pickups appear different from current builds, though; they're more slender, like the traditional J singlecoils. was wondering if someone could clue me about that, and other changes that might have happened between its 2005 build date and now. in the pix there's a small toggle switch on the control plate but there's no battery access on the back.

hope i'm not making a pest of myself, but i do appreciate the insights of veteran Dingwall players!

Those are Super Fatties. Still a great tone (still used on the Sklar models). The switch is active/passive and the battery is under the pickguard. Likely a different pre-amp, Aguilar OBP-1 or 3. You can search the Dingwall boards for Aguilar and find different comments about the tone. I had one of these and loved it, upgraded to a Super P/J that I couldn't pass up.

I have a 2006 Super J/P and it's got an OPB- 1 in it which was the norm at the time.

BTW. I just put a set of Black Nylon Tapes on it to help me with a fretting hand problem and boy I wish I'd done it sooner. I've always liked these strings but they're the bomb on this bass for me.

What kind of strings did you get?
Dr's?

I've been wanting to try them on my SJ. I Have Drs on my roscoe 6 and like em a lot there but I just love stainless so much on my Dingwalls that I haven't commited to a change. I really want to just see black strings on my SJ though as I think they will look sexy as hell.

Yup. The super fatties are still production they just don't get the same hype as the FD3s. They are a killer pick up and probably a great choice on a SJ.

I have them in a Z and could not be happier. The FD3 are so killer too though. I'd describe the fatties(which are actually the skinnies) as warmer and maybe thumpier but still extremely clean. I'm actually extremely torn on which pick up to put in my next build. Good luck with yours!!!

Had a spare set of D'Addario tapes kicking around (use them on my Fender Am Dlx J).
Almost put my spare set of TI's on but I didn't want to cut them short for the DW so I slapped the D'Ads on and I'm very happy.
I'm pretty much a flats guy now (Rotos on one P and TI's on my '73 P)
I had DW nickels on the SJ/P and while they're great strings, I just don't dig the feel of rounds anymore.
The Tapes sound plenty bright for me with the inherent character of the SJ/P. I usually run passive but now I can see me using active a bit more as that zing is now gone.
My cab of choice are Baer ML112 (no tweet) so you can see where I'm coming from.

You won't have to alter the saddle screws with the new Payson Flats. Perfect drop in fit.

Ah yes. Coming from different places. I'd say I gravitate to the opposite side of the bass sound spectrum then yourself.
How boring would it be if we all wanted the same thing!?! :0

Chad at The Bass Shop Seattle has a Gloss Black one in stock right now. It likely won't last - the Green one he had went in like 24 hours. So I'd call today / right now if you can:

Edit: Not trying to take a sale from Michael - Michael has been great to work with as well and is obviously very active with our TB community here and also deserves to be strongly considered. Just pointing out Chad since he has one in hand right this second.
