Hi Guys, I'm about to embark on a Nashville to New York tour. If anyone's going to Summer NAMM or lives in the New York, New Jersey area, I'd love for you to come out and say hi. I'll have a Yellow Swirl NG2 5 and a Purple D-bird with me for you to try.

I tried to say "Hi" at the last Winter NAMM but you were deeply involved in a conversation with someone about something so I decided to be a good bass player - noticeable when wanted, otherwise not drawing attention to himself.

I was scheduled to go to summer NAMM but taught a workshop this past week in Indiana and the farm and music business got me behind the game so I had to cancel NAMM. Catch up with you at winter NAMM hopefully. 3 of my students in Indiana came down from Canada and one of them said their brother knows you. Small world.

Don't have a Ding any (sorry) but can honestly say that "Stormy" (my Z2) completely changed my perception of what a bass should be like (in the 18 months I had it).

I believe you know my bass enabler Ian from Long & McQuade here. I just ordered my first Dingwall from him (originally ordered a black NG-2, but changed to red because that contrast is too sexy to hide). Can't wait to play it!

So here's a question to those of you who own a Super P and/or a Super P/J 4 or 5:

Is the P-pickup on a Super P/J in the exact same position as the P on a regular Super P?

I ask because a lot of basses with P/J-setups change the pickup positions ever so slightly to accommodate for two pickups.

I am considering ordering a Super P/J 5 and I wanna know if I can get the exact tone shown in this clip, soloing the P-pickup:



If not, is it possible to order it that way?

You need to rethink this. Will you get that exact tone? No. You wont have that bass, you wont have those exact amp settings, and most importantly you wont have those hands.

If you order a super P/J you will get an amazing bass, and it will have a lot of that P bass sound. But it will sound like you through that bass with your amp.

I have not made this leap as I do not have an FD-3 equipped bass. On this subject, I did find out that there is a plan to develop an FDV version of the split-coil precision pickup. Don't hold your breath or lose any sleep with anticipation of this development, it will be a while...

Yes, the precision pickup will be in the same position. The magnetic polarity is reversed on the 'J' pickup to allow it to be positioned so closely to the precision pickup without interference.

Thanks for the answer! I'm seriously considering ordering a bass now, and I think I'd want the J-pickup in it for extra options, even though I'd use the P-pickup only for 95% of the time.

Another question; what about the difference in sound between an all maple and all wenge neck in an alder body Super P?
