so i photographed my bass to prove it… and the frets look like odd egg shapes. No photoshop involved. Likely caused by the single lens camera vs our dual lens eyes.

I myself made a... minimal, quite sarcastic remark, but it does not mean I do not appreciate this new approach, see? Actually it is interesting and somehow substantial: looking at the fretboard with the strings on, you don't even realize that the lines are "segmented". If anything, instead, I am surprised that at Dingwall they only sell something like 6 (yes: six!) fretless per year!!!P.S.: this is Talkbass, remember? Tough crowd!!!
a solution to a non existing problem? Well obviously it was a problem to some.
if anything it is over-engineering for an unlikely outcome (for most), but imho it makes sense, is an option (no one is forcing it on the buyer), and if you want fret lines… a nice solution. I am sure it will cost more… but in the world of custom… getting what i want is more important than a few extra dollars. Just my opinion.
That being said… i like frets.
i come from a world of endurance sports car racing. “Over engineering” wins races. I dig it. And remember… Dingwall comes from the land where a 80 degree annual fluctuation in temperature is kind of just the normal… irrespective of humidity.
most exotic sports cars wont be run in polar temperatures… but brands like porsche are still up in the frigid cold testing. Over engineering. But one cant question the quality of the end result.
There are many good cars… many good bases. What separates the best from the rest is often the performance at the “extremes.” And that comes from good design, and “over-engineering.”

I should’ve waited a few more posts, but close enough.
Makes sense...kinda like jeans with elastic wastes...makes life easier for those who don't want to put effort into their level of slimness.
I know this is OT, but here we are 5 pages in and no one's mentioned the copper finish on that bass?!
I don't need the lines at all. I don't even look at them. It's not about easier or effort, it's about the fact that my lines glow in the dark and that's cool as heck, i already have unlined fretless, why not have a sick glow in the dark one? Lol
I'd like to know what it's like to see, as well as hear, labella black tapes on that bad mama jama.
