Dingwall Super J : Vintage + modern

I played a Super J the other day at Barry Lamb's place and it was killer. whicked fender mistique and marcus miller slap tone. The new pickups sound awsome and the neck is super slim with easy playability. Great bass for the money and apeals to plenty. The other bass of Barry's I played was his new prima, but thats a whole other story that involves alot of interjections.

Is it a good Prima story or a bad Prima story?

Wow- finally another human got to play a Super J..woohoo.
I too would like to play a J-J arrangement, mines a P/J, but i bet its killer. I'm also quite happy at how the neck shape turned out, intially i 'd hope it ws going to be a Dingwall flat neck shape (love it on the ABI), but I guess it didn't work well in this context. Sheldon asked me along time ago how i like my necks and shy of mentioning that smaller is better, and 1.5" at the nut, the rest was his doing.The super j neck is very comfortable, and playable

The Prima story-I would suspect trying to describe the Prima artist series bass that Barry has at the office would be....hummm. would be like trying to describe a nite sitting between Petra nemcova and jennifer walcott, them fawning over you the whole nite and you trying to convince your friends it actually happened and you weren't drunk

From JPs description of it, I imagine thats the case as well. He said it was the nicest bass at Musikmuse (sp?) this year hehe.

Yup thats Mark White (Spin doctors bass player), the Spin Doctors apparently played at the Kentucky Derby (at least that Marks story).
Let me tell ya.. even a$$ backwards he can spank the living pyjamas out if this bass, it sounds like a totally different beast when he plays it. If you get a chance to see him play -look out... hes as techinically gifted as wooten, and wayyyy funky.

I tell you, I just bought a Z1 5 string in tobacco sunburst that is actually shown in the gallery section on Sheldon's site. His attention to detail is unreal and this new bass model is the bomb. If I hope it comes out in a five stringer.

Frank - lastest update from Sheldon (yesterday) was that there is no new news other than what I posted a few posts up. I would bug him more - but I want him to focus on bass building - not answering my questions!!!!! Haven't heard anything about colors either.

I went to Bass Central. After toying around with some Bongos, Elricks I picked up an Anfterburner 5.

They just told me not worry about the frets and "just play". So I sort of used the force and made a conscious effort to not look at my left hand postions while playing.

Conclusion: light, comfy and completely intuitive. This bass felt BETTER than anything else I played in that store. It imparted that feeling that "this one is made for me."

I would really like to try a super J or Super PJ but I need a 5-stringer.

Another thing that stuck out was the light weight and balance.

The sound was really awesome- sounds a lot like my custom jazz bass.

Any Updates? Haven't heard anything in a while. Frank, does your computer have like an inch of dust on it since you got the new D-wall or what? Any updates from you Egg? I have been seriously considering dropping the coin on a "full scale" 5 string Super-J(I imagine a 5 may be built with a longer scale anyway?) if I could get Sheldon to build it for me, it's just in the "contemplation" stage right now.

Low - last update from Sheldon is that my Super J should be ready some time in July - a bit beyond the end of June first quoted. I will post a review as soon as I get my grubby little hands on it!!!!

I haven't heard anything about a 5er yet.

We are working on the pilot run of 4-strings now. Minor tweaks are holding us up a bit. As well we are trying to squeeze every wish list item in so that right off the bat the basses are as evolved as possible.

I've done the rough layout for the 5-string, but have not built a prototype yet. Instead of our standard long scales it will have the same scales as the 4 plus the added B-string (32" - 35").

Wow.. I was just thinking today how great it would be to have a fanned fret 35" B bass. Now instead of chopping up a fretless Lakland I can just wait on one of these.
