I've been listening to a bit of Captain Beefheart recently. In particular the album 'Lick my decals off Baby'. It seems likely that the bassist was using a Dano on that album, and again on Trout Mask Replica. The tone is pretty undesirable and unusable, especially when the bass is being played with metal banjo picks. There isn't a lot of low end, and instead it has a metallic 'ring' to it as well as a whole raft of muffled rubberiness. It sounds like the bass parts and tone were devised to wind people up (check out the bass solo on Bellerin' Plain).

However that weird tone has got under my skin, so I wish there was a copper coloured shortscale Dano shorthorn on the market just now. Sort of.

For sure Dano's have an unmistakable sound. I recently restored this '68 Coral Deluxe Bass (a Danelectro offshoot) and love it's unique tone/delivery.

In keeping to the threads theme - this bass was discontinued in '69. The Coral company bought Danelectro in the late 60's and folded after 3 years.

G&L did some cool guitars/basses in the 80's - even the name "Interceptor" is so 80's. It probably sounds great also - an L-2000 with narrow buckers.

Not completely discontinued by the mfr but no longer available Stateside, the SX J's are really nice instruments for like no money. I've owned a total of 6, and the most I had at one time was 4! Only two left are the ones on the ends -- the black one is undergoing a complete refin and reload, but the blonde is staying just like she is.

Testament to their desirability is that they routinely go used for 30% to 50% more than their original purchase price.

Unfortunately some dillweed just broke the head of my daughter's Alvarez.

So we'll see if I can fix that first. Definitely in the market for a P though...

The Fender Marcus Miller 5 is my favourite of all the Fender basses. It's my main player, and I even sold my excellent '71 Jazz in favour of it. Just a great Jazz with a serviceable low B string -it's not as good a B as my Dingwall Ng-2, of course, but it works when I need a Fender sound and some extra low notes. They really oughtta bring this one back.
