Living legend & USC prof Peter Erskine has great touch IMO the greatest dynamics, but you better get out of his way when he's up to bat. Invalid Link Removed

I've been fortunate to see him play intimate jazz gigs with his own band but never w weather report nor w stan kenton. Erskine gets better with age.

Steve Gadd --incredible. Soul + technical expertise, & he can hit. If he plays w his band jazz/blues outfit I strongly recommend you catch his show althoughhe doesn't have a bassist in his band--instead, the inimitable Joey DeFrancesco on organ, possibly the greatest living jazz organist.
His famous paradiddle vid: http://youtu.be/wl4DKmbfDyk

Kenny Aranoff can cook but he didj't really get a chance to w Mellencamp. Likewise Bozzio is not widely known as an articulate yet emotional jazz cat http://youtu.be/FMYWB8CZxv8

Elvin Jones--rest in peace--is given.
Anyone else?

I'm a huge fan of Vinnie Colaiuta, who played with Sting on several of his solo albums, that guy is a brilliant player and has amazing feel that adds an extra dimension to the songs. Check out "Seven Days" off of Sting's Summoner Tales album.

Ed Shaughnessey - Tonight Show, Joe Morello - Dave Brubeck, Buddy Rich self-proclaimed worlds best drummer, Art Blakey - Jazz Messengers, Buddy Miles best shuffle in the business, Keith Moon, Richie Hayward - Little Feat, Willie Smith - Muddy Water, Tito Puente, Benny Benjamin - Funk Brothers, and so many more!

Morello & Thigpen had great touch & dynamics. Morello could really cook too. He had some intense solos on record. Hard to beat Ed thigpen's light touch w Oscar Peterson.
I also like Joey Baron. The majority of his work w John Zorn.

Talking to myself: there's a buddy rich vs neil peart vid on youtube for some reason. idon't see the correlation. anyway, you can definitely hear peart's drumline style opposed to rich's swing band be-bop.

Of rock drummers I like Stewart Copeland's sound.

alex van halen for his tone, taste and authority.
vinnie paul for his economy and ability to drive a groove through minimalism at times.
john bonham obviously.
but my fave would have to be my brother. in my ears, he does exactly what i think a drummer should do. best unknown drummer IMO.

Three more.
1. Carter Beauford. Monster player in his prime.
2. Phil Collins. Much better drummer than singer. Rarely gets a compliment for his drum skills
3. Taylor Hawkins. Gotta be good to play in a band with a great drummer that now plays guitar and sings lead.
