Double Bass Discuss Favorite Drummers

JP Gaster of Clutch - he has amazing chops. When I see them live, it's nearly impossible not to stare in wonderment.
Gavin Harrison (King Crimson/Porcupine Tree) and DJ Bonebrake (X) are both great...and although I loathe Rush, I think Neil Peart is an immensely talented drummer.

I'm a rock guy, so my fave drummers are:
Neil Peart -Rush
Bill Bruford - Yes
Alan White- Yes
Bonzo - Zep
Ian Paice - Deep Purple
Carl Palmer - ELP
Lee Kerslake- Uriah Heep
Bill Ward-Sabbath
Albert Bouchard -BOC
Ginger Baker - Cream

So many great players listed so far that I really love. One guy who's brand of creativity really appeals to me who I'd like to play with more than anyone else is Jim Keltner.

A new favorite is Michael Jerome currently on tour with Richard Thompson. He's one of those drummers who plays with absolute fluid authority without ever completely taking over. A small kit player with tons of chops tempered by supreme taste...another guy I'd like to play with.

Hmm, I seem to be drawing a distinct line between players whose playing I really like (Colaiuta, Weckl, Chambers, Garibaldi, Gadd, Elvin, Roach, Blakey, Tony Williams, Bill Stewart etc) and players I'd like to play with. Not that I would ever pass up a chance to play with anyone great but I almost feel like with some of these guys the conversation might be a little more one sided than would be comfortable.

I was driving this morning, listening to Ahmad Jamal live album But Not For Me w/ Vernel Fournier--he's on what sounds like small quiet tight kit. Micro style but man he cook at such low volume. I like that. Makes me want to take up a snare & brushes.

So either dropping bombs elvin jones or slick microscopic fournier my favorites. Not in the middle.
Billy Higgins rest in peace was on a million recordings for his straight ahead style I'm not disrespecting Higgins I love him too.

Josh Freese is a stand out in terms of taste, chops and creativity. Modern day rock heavyweight on the drums.

Edit: just realized this was on the db side. He played alongside Justin Meldal Johnson on upright during NIN's 'farewell' tour. Just had to make it relevant :D
