Distorted cleans?

My Peavey Backstage Plus is distorting on the clean channel (If you call it a channel, it is a single channel that distorts if either the pre or post are turned past 5) but recently it distorts at any level, and pulses like I have a flanger or fast chorus, and it is getting to the point where I am considering playing through my bass amp, though I am uncertain if the guitar will harm it. Any suggestions?

Good to know, maybe I'll try that. I was confused because I heard bass is dangerous for guitar amp, didn't know if it was vice versa...
