He has a Gretsch with a built in Green Bullet harmonica mic, its on a retractable cord I think his luthier got off a vacuum.
Its pretty crazy, if you watch It Might Get Loud it shows the guy cutting a whole in the back of his gretsch and putting in the cord. Its a great movie.

You can use distortion but you need either a strong gate or a killswitch of some sort. If you've ever seen Mike Patton, he actually makes self-contained environments to cut down the feedback, like building mics into gas masks and things like that.
