DIY Budget Cab! How Bad Could It Be?

HornResp is no more accurate than WinISD for tuning constant area ports. The math for port calculations is simple, relatively speaking, and was very well known long before Theile and Small came along. AFAIK all software uses the same math for simple straight ports. What HornResp can do is calculate complicated port configurations, like flared, reverse flared, and multi-segment ports that use combinations of straight, flared and reverse flared sections in the same port. That makes it a very good tool to identify what a not so obvious alignment actually is. Many cabs claim to be one thing but are really something else. The old Sunn 200S is one, it was called a rear loaded folded horn, but it was really a bass reflex with a reverse flared port. The 1950s Karlson is another, the inventor called it a horn, but it was really a dual chamber series tuned 6th order bass reflex. There are current examples too.
 
My day got busy, so plugging in the specs to Winisd will need to wait until tomorrow. This seems to be getting complicated, and lots of different opinions, which is great, and wanted/expected. I will likely use the cab design recommendation from Winisd and just go with it, unless it is the size of my house:bassist: Will be back tomorrow to post the dimensions put out from Winisd.

Haha, true! That is a good thing, and the reason I posted originally, that is, wanting guidance. Left to my own devices the cab would definitely suck. Atleast now I have some direction, and software that can get me in the ballpark, or atleast the right city:smug:. U guys rock! Will be back tomorrow.

Ten times out of nine that's not a good idea. WinISD defaults to what's referred to as the maximally flat alignment possible with the driver. If you're making a hi-fi speaker that may be a worthwhile goal, but it isn't with pro-sound speakers. Knowing how to get a desired result, or even what the desired result should be, only comes with experience.

It doesn't do that. Where newbies are concerned what modeling software is good for is seeing what a replacement driver will do in an existing cab, mostly to see if it's compatible or not. Otherwise all it gives them is a lot of data that they don't know how to interpret or make use of.

Get the best full range flat response you can get.
The cabinet is now useful for many purposes.

Including amp/cab modeling if you want it.
Unless it becomes too large to be useful for the desired application. Important tradeoff IME.

A good CAD program is a good thing to learn.
Fusion 360 is no cost for hobby use.

Many examples of using parametric design in the tutorials. Here's one idea for a ported sub.

There's several other designs in the communities.

Once you put in the basic design with a set internal volume, the parametric parameters allow you resize the cabinet and it'll keep the same volume. Or keep the same clearance for the driver.

It interfaces to panel layout software so if you want to keep the design down to one sheet, or a sheet and a half of plywood.
I can also analyze panel stress and help you figure out where to brace. (Advanced use)

You'll still need to build a prototype and do some speaker measurements. MDF is good for prototypes as it's cheap and easy to cut and screw together with the right screws.

Software doesn't change the fact that the response curve depends on the size of the box. The box is an electromechanical filter. It's always going to be more efficient (size, sensitivity, etc) to design the filter function that you want into the box, then to design some other box and change its response function with signal processing.

Designing a multi-purpose box is moving the goalposts. That's not what the OP asked for. But there's no reason why modeling software can't change the response of a non-flat box into another non-flat box.

Moving goal posts is good sometimes. ;) A football field can be divided up into short field soccer. A slight change to the original field may make it useful for many purposes. Not too much though if you need a permanent track around the outside.

But sure, take the software modeling tools, then take the curves and put them into a DAW and listen to what the cabinet will sound like.

WinISD uses a predetermined box, it provides the volume and lower cut-off frequency (Fcl) per speaker parameters. It also provides various curves and graphs so the user can determine if the provided outcome is desired. However, I didn't like the latest version and stuck with earlier 0.50a7 version.

I highly recommend taking a look at BoxNotes, which provides resonance points and a cut list (panel sizes). As I stated earlier, I bounce between the two because neither is perfect and have their set of problems. Parts Express sells speaker cab design software, but you may not want to get in that deep.

Great, and thanks. After putting in the parameters of the speaker it left me with an SPL of 82.01. However, cannot find any place to input box dimensions or cubic feet, unless the predetermined box dimensions are uknown. Thanks again

You did something wrong. Assuming you have WinISD 0.7 on the driver editor page the USPL should be 98.2, the SPL 96.5.

When you do the initial model it gives you the choice of different alignments, such as BB4, QB3, EBS 3, which won't mean anything to you. No matter, use whichever it defaults to. Then open the Box window, where you'll see Volume and Tuning freq. You can change both to see the result. It doesn't give box dimensions, because there are thousands of possible box dimensions that will give the same volume.
There are at least a dozen other items that can be tweaked to give a more accurate result, like cabinet lining thickness, port velocity, voice coil inductance, vent end correction. A skilled user will use all of them, but that requires knowing what they all mean. I was building cabs for many years before I did. Mucho firewood.
 
Making the first cuts. Decided to go with a 210 cab since I have 2 of the Eden speakers at 4ohms each, it did not make sense to have 2 single 110's at 4ohms each. Basically cutting the D410XLT in half and modifying dimensions and speaker configuration a bit, but keeping volume and ports the same. We will see how it goes. Thanks again for all the help. Peace

yes correct, and sorry for the confusion between, no cone movement and "very little cone movement. and yes the cone will still move but there is very little movement at Fb. which yes is the basic reflex function where the cone movement is restricted and a majority of the sound pressure level is being generated by the port.

also with the rice test, salt works a little better. and yes you want to test it with a fair decent amount of signal so the salt dances pretty good , which helps make it more obvious when it is reduced. likewise yes when your lowering the frequency of the sweep tone and see visible cone restriction, the actual visible cone movement when restricted wont show a exact number. The movement will be observed over a 7 to 10hz span. and then you note your numbers at the frequency it starts slowing down/ and the number when it starts to rise again. and basically with those 2 numbers you find the median/ or middle of that for Fb.
have fun
