DJ4 with pick... terrible?

I didn't liked the pick-sound of my dj4. In fact I didn't like the sound of the whole bass that much. I don't know how to describe it, but it sounded less big and more refined that a my fenders. They were very well made and set up, no question about it, but the sound was not my cup of tea.

I guess that about sums up my feelings as well.
But im going to stick with it.

Could be the swamp ash playing a part in the sound too.
Definitely the interaction of the wood & pickups . for a more fenderish vibe i've always liked the Joe osborn more. Definitely feels more old school, especially my alder bodied one.

Lakland pups sound like ass--no balls. If you want pick snarl, then use Rotosound roundwounds and put a set of Aeros or Antiquity IIs on there, and get rid of that tone sucking active eq. Get an SVT or SVT clone, and you'll rip people's heads off with that bass.

If you want to hear an example of very nasty and rude old-school jazz bass with rounds and a pick through and SVT, check out Lynyrd Skynyrd's 1st album. Bass courtesy of Ed King.

Although I actually like the lakland pickups, I will suggest nordstrand pickups as well

Andy - I respectfully disagree...I think the Laklands in my JO5 have lots 'o balls....the CHI sonics in my JO5CS have even more....

however, to each his own.....I agree that Aeros and the Fralins have a different sound to them that you may like better....as for playing a DJ with a pick, ask Adam Clayton....the past 2 tours were almost exclusively Lakland and he plays pick alot of the time....he seemed to be happy with the sound.

OP - sorry if you don't like the sound...can you get a recording and send it to Kirk or Carl at lakland for them to listen too? as stated earlier, maybe a wire is amiss etc....how does it sound finger style?

I suck at picking but have experimented with it....seemed like the DJ5 I used to own sounded fine (disregarding my sucky playing style).....

Wow...I totally disagree. I have ChiSonics in four Laklands and they're all balls! They are absolutely the best pickups I have heard. Very stong mids, and huge bottom. Like Darkstars with angry mids.
