Two recordings of my attempt at the Seinfeld theme. One recorded on my DJ5, the other on a borrowed Metro RV5. Which sounds better, or are they just different?

DJ5 or RV5?

Two recordings of my attempt at the Seinfeld theme. One recorded on my DJ5, the other on a borrowed Metro RV5. Which sounds better, or are they just different?
I thought they both sounded good but the RV5 did it for me. Seemed clearer sounding in both lows and highs.
That preamp makes a difference, but I can come quite close with just an amp. The first time I recorded it, it was late, and the DJ5 sounded dull because I had the eq turned down. I re-recorded today home alone so I could crank it a bit.
Both sounded fine. I believe the Metro had a bit more chime to it's tone.

Do this - buy The Jazz Theory book by Mark Levine and start on page 1. Borrow a small keyboard or MIDI controller for your laptop so you can have something playing the chords and progressions you learn under your bass practice.
Now spend all the time you think about basses on reading this book instead.
You will thank me in about 5 years.

I don't think you understand. I am very happy with my DJ5. I think it sounds great compared to the RV5 with amp tweaking alone. I'm not looking to buy another bass. I plan on buying the Sadowsky box in a month or two when I want the active shine. I will buy the jazz theory book and the keyboard. I know my playing and knowledge need a whole lot of work. I actually need to get another teacher. I was working with a local pro, but we missed too many lessons because he was touring.
You make a lot of threads and usually they are GASsy, so you faked me out. The sadowsky box is awesome.
But yeah, the keyboard and the jazz theory book would change a lot of players lives more than any bass. You will like it a lot I believe, a lot based on your musical taste.
I'm meeting with a colleague of mine today who is a professor of music theory (we are co-writing a piece on local music history. He started out in Albert King's horn section!) I hang around a lot of good musicians, I need to improve.
As for basses, between my Peaveys and DJ5, I cannot justify anymore, and as my clips show, it's not like I would actually sound any better on a much more expensive bass!
Based on most peoples behaviors you would probably end up regretting the purchase and selling at a loss. This happens all the time. That is why the practice hours logged are so key to investing in an instrument.
I think the price point for a DJ5 is perfect. Its expensive enough to be a great player, but not crazy and out of control.
But one of them, hang in to it for 6 months then sell on TB.
Buy the other model, hang on to it for 6 months & repeat.

the Sadowsky clearly sounds better for what the theme song was going for. and frankly, they make a great bass.

Doc, my vote is going for the RV5...I am big Lakland fanboy, but the RV5 did just sound better (especially for this test). And to second what Chef said there is a big difference when it comes to active vs. passive J-basses. I say buy one anyway!!!!! Haha
Both basses sound good and neither sounds quite like the keyboard that was used to record the actual Seinfeld theme.

Once I get Sadowsky outboard preamp, my DJ5 will have that active sparkle too.
The PC answer is they're both good, just different. The RV got closer to the Seinfield theme sound, but I actually prefer the DJ.
DJ5 because I love maple with black blocks.
