Its going to be killer for slap tone. For finger you will want roll off your neck pickup just a tad. Hit an open note and listen for it to change to more of a wahh (small turn of the knob will do it). That will get you some mids back. This is a powerful boost only pre. Set volume to 10 and then use headphones so you can hear the details. If you are boosting bass or treble past halfway, I'd be real surprised. I rarely went past the third line on the pre. Remember, the more you boost, the more the mids are cut.

I used to own three DJ5 (ash/rosewood and ash/maple) and a Sadowsky MV5 (ash/maple) and I think the passive DJ5 has "more meat" .... even when played to a Sadowsky outboard preamp. That being said, I went from all-Sadoswky in all its 5 string flavours (PJ, Big Singles, 60'sJJ, 70's JJ) to an all passive Nordy & Reverend stable and I like it this way :)

How soon we forget! I certainly had the bass treble turned up too much on that clip!

I think a lot of it is timing issues. Do you practice to a metronome? Slow it down, and make the metronome feel good and you will be able to judge the tone better too after that.

I think I was just in too much of a hurry to record my new toy. I need to rehearse a routine before I record because I always get a little tense when recording. I know the preamp is fine, I have owned one before.

Oh man, you are just torturing yourself.

Do this - buy The Jazz Theory book by Mark Levine and start on page 1. Borrow a small keyboard or MIDI controller for your laptop so you can have something playing the chords and progressions you learn under your bass practice.

Now spend all the time you think about basses on reading this book instead.

You will thank me in about 5 years.

Wow. And you got some likes for this condescending line of crap. In my days, the condescending creeps told you to buy Micky Baker's book and come back when you had it memorized.

Dr. Cheese is a good guy and a hobbyist. He (like me) has a day job and other things in his life than trying to slam down fellow gear enthusiasts. He likes to play bass, and I'm sure he recognizes his own limitations, without having someone with no proven expertise offer him life advice. He enjoys his hobby for what it is.

You softened your tone as the thread progressed, but when a fellow bassist asks which bass sound you prefer, he's not necessarily asking for your opinion on what the next 5 years of his life should be invested in.

I did not take offense. I know I am no great bassist. I know I would benefit from study. I think Angelcrusher felt I was gear obsessed, and wasting time looking only at gear instead of study.

Relax with the personal attacks. I really think he would enjoy the book based on him taste in music.

Update, the Sadowsky preamp delivers big time! I have been using it in church for at least two services, and it is delivering a great boost. I have some Dunlop Marcus Miller strings I need to put on, but I just have not gotten around to it yet. I've got nothing but DJ5 love!
