Do/did you like high school?

I made a tread like a few years, when I started high school. I can't seem to find it with all the server updates, I'm not surprised. I found it extremely helpful and insightful so there it goes again!

Do you like high school?
Is/was it over-rated?
What made it good/bad?
If you could do one thing differently, what would you do?

High school was fun and pretty much a joke. Me being the youngest of 4 kids, I had older siblings telling me how easy highschool is and what waste of time it is, while still encouraging me to enjoy the simple life while I had it.

Been out of highschool now 7 years, and I would tend to agree. It was a waste of time, but I do still miss being a "kid".

Love it. It's a great feeling when you can walk into a class and everyone starts talking to you.

It was a complete waste of time for me. I did not learn a single thing of value in high school.*

I didn't like the people in high-school, the teachers and admins were pricks (even the ones I liked had to be pricks by the school's rules, so it's not their fault) and we didn't really get any freedoms.

Looking back, I should have done Running Start. It's a program where you get to go to a community college for free while still in high school. Your credit counts towards both high school and college, so you can at least get the BS classes out of the way. But "running start" seemed like something the kids who knew they were stupid did, something like technical school, but for those who know they have no future, instead of the ones who want to change their future. Turns out I was wrong and I made a big mistake by staying in regular high school.

*I did learn a bit, but if you take the ratio of things I learned vs. time spent where I could have learned something, you end up getting 0. I swear, there was so much busy work without any point it's ridiculous. It's day care.

High school... it was cool. It is what you make of it though.

For me... the drugs made it VERY bad. I started freshmen year and it carried on for too long (Hugs, not drugs!). On the good: high school opened my eyes to a lot of things, from responsibility to cooking eggs to trigonometry to basic accounting to spanish.

If I could do things differently. I would have: 1) NOT touched a single illegal substance. and 2) Played football. I always wanted to, had the build and skills, but never went out for it. It's one of my biggest regrets. Sports opens a LOT of doors. Whether through scholarships, relationships, or sheer enjoyment.

I also regret not putting more time into studying. Again, you get out what you put in.

High school is a great time to just have fun with friends, without too many responsibilities, you should enjoy it while you can, because it will be over before you know it

Now that I'm older. I wish high-school actually prepared you for the real world and taught you something usefull.

I thought I hated it until my parents moved us to the 'burbs and I had to go to a public high school in the senior year which seemed 20 years behind the times. I really hated that place. Guys wore fraternity jackets. I seemed to be the only hippy in there. High school was spent entirely "high".

At the time, it was great. Constant socializing, but in retrospect, I barely talk to anyone I went to high school with and I graduated less than 2 years ago.

On the whole I like it. If you're talking about JUST the school and the time spent learning then I hate every second of it. But the years of my life that I'm in it are awesome! Especially since I've started driving. There are a couple downsides, but overall its pretty good.

while I was there it wasn't that great, but as years go by, i realize that i didn't have that bad of a time, and actually, it was pretty good i just wish i would have gotten more involved in stuff in HS

Socially? It was pretty much a total disaster for me. It may very well be a fault on my part and just be my personality and everything, but it was pretty much useless except for the lessons it taught me. I must admit I learned a whole lot about the sociological aspect of people.

Academically I had no problem with high school though, in fact I enjoyed going to most classes.

I like it.

Roughly 90% of my day in high school (I did the math for it) is absolutely chill, I'm getting real good grades, have a decent group of friends (Read: A close batch of great friends, then various acquaintances/school chums). My schedule isn't that hard for me, grades aren't a huge concern.

It was all right. The school itself was more like four years of filler between grade school and college, but hanging out with friends and building robots is a great time.

1. It was decent. Not as awkward as pop-culture tends to portray it. I went to class, socialized with people, but mostly spent my time practicing. Whenever I had time off, I would return home (I was forunate enough to have a car) and relax.

2. Well, it depends. In terms of social significance... not really. You learn quite a bit about yourself and others, especially the changes in personality as time elapses. Also... what you do in that period of time can have an effect on you later in life, but then again so does every choice you could make.

3. The good... the teachers that inspired. The people that I still talk to today.

The bad... I try not to dwell on the negatives. But obviously there were issues, be it related to academics, or my peers that sucked at the time. Now, it just does not matter. Nor did it at the time, but hindsight is 20-20.

4. Nothing. I like who I am today.

High school was a disaster for me. Nothing but social awkwardness and anxiety. I had serious inferiority issues that are inherent with the social cliques in high school.

As bad as high school was is as much as I loved college and I love where I'm at now. I matured a lot, both mentally and physically, after high school.

If you're currently in high school and hate it, don't assume that life will always be like that.

I felt free after I left high school. I very seldom look back.

Yes.

Not over rated one bit for me. Everything I expected and then some.

What made it good/bad?

Good.....The amount of responsibility laid upon ME to finish my education. All of the different classes I could pick from to take.
Bad.......class sizes were too big. Teachers who did not care.

If you could do one thing differently, what would you do?

Take harder classes earlier on. A counselor advised me to "take it easy" my freshman year. It was bad advice in the end.

High school required absolutely nothing from me besides turning in the homework and not being a complete moron. By senior year I was taking 3rd year Japanese, Calculus, and Physics, and I was still sleeping through my classes. And I'm no genius.

And I didn't really have a choice of what classes to take. Not only was there no real choice, but with the amount of required classes you had to take, it didn't leave much for electives.

I don't know if you went to college or not, but now I actually have to study on my own time, get to pick from a WIDE variety of classes, and a class could have up to 300 people vs. the 30 in high-school.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that we did not go to the same high school. I'll also take another wild guess and assume you were not in high school in 1987 when I was. With those thoughts in mind, your high school experience was much different than mine for even more reasons than I listed. Perhaps things were different for me when I was in high school?

Simple example....writing research papers. In junior high, I remember being assigned a topic and then taken to the library where a large cart full of all of the books related to the subjects we were assigned laid out in front of us. In front of the class stood the teacher ready to show us how to write the report. We were also given a sheet of reference works to help us with our report at home. Jump forward to high school, and I remember getting an assignment to write a research paper on a subject related to the theme of the class and then being told to have it done in one week or so. This was also before the internet was widely used, so it involved me going to the library after school and work to do my research.

Class choices....well, I am sorry you did not have as many choices as we did. I remember sitting down with my parents and spending quite a bit of time deciding on my electives, as well as other academic classes beyond the basics.

Yes, I have gone to college and it is more difficult that high school to be sure. Not way more difficult, but just another step up to prepare me for this here real world.

I've been out of school for almost a year and I don't miss it one bit. At the time it was alright, considering I did absolutly NOTHING. I would go to school everyday messed up on some kind of pill, and pretty much sit in class and talk with friends, sleep, etc. Everything they taught was IMO, completly worthless and stupid, so I just said screw it, and didn't do a single peice of work.
