Do Fretless Exist without a Burst Finish?

It's all in good fun. I've been on a big Donny Benét kick recently, feel several people here could learn from him.

Yes actually, I've found I'm way more likely to pick up an instrument and practice if I like looking at it.

Literally any bass you want, if you have a pair of pliers and some wood fill.

I presume this is because most fretless players out there haven't progressed past where they were 30-40 years ago.

IF I were going to do this and wanted to stay in Fender-shaped-objects:

Fretless used is easy to find, as half the guys that bought them discover that 'this ain't what I thought it was going to be' and they go under the bed or for sale fairly quickly.

So I'd find a barely used Squier fretless and another fretted Squier that, ahem, would be a color to suit your sensibilities, and swap necks. Buy right with a little careful searching, you could have change left over.

The OP mentioned that some of us could learn from him, he doesn't impress me all that much but hey I'm a doddering old boomer, what do i know? He does seem to impress himself quite a bit though.

OP is not wrong. This is a perfect example of newish music that I love. I don’t know about learning from, but I definitely enjoy his music immensely, and it’s fun to play.

His intonation doesn't seem that hot to me, but it's absolutely not my style of music at all.

Boomer finishes. lol. That’s awesome. Yeah, fretless basses are really geared more towards jazz, contemporary, and classical players. Finding a cool finish is next to impossible for a reasonable price.

My recommendation, build a parts bass. Buy a loaded body in whatever color you want on reverb, then purchase a fretless neck. Then you have your own custom bass with a cool color. Plus, you can definitely do that for under $1k.

absolutely is. It goes great with the character playing it, a man at middle age overly confident that he's a womanizer despite being stuck in the 80s and singing about the mundanities of life. Benét toes that line of post-irony so well, of having a deep appreciation for the music he's drawing from while portraying a guy who's clueless. It's great.

Perfect choice of bass for that aesthetic, not my choice of bass for mine.

I hadn't meant about bass playing (though I love his writing), so much as developing a willingness to have a laugh at oneself from time to time. I hope I'll still be able to in 20, 30, 40 years.

Cost me about $800 to put together using a Squier body, Warmoth neck, and cobbled-together quality pickups & electronics. You can probably do the same with a Warmoth-finished Vibrant color body for about $1k to $1200.

How do you sleep in the spread? It would keep me awake at night….LOL.

It does seem like you read him somewhat the way I did. But is it an act like you seem to be insinuating or do does he really think that? I only watched two of his videos, one of music and the other of him talking.
And just to let you know, the term "boomers" can sound a bit condescending. The 60's and 70's were actually a much cooler time than now, especially the music.
