Do Fretless Exist without a Burst Finish?

So you do think that he's very self aware then? I thought the opposite but I'm not familiar with him at all, just watched a two minute video.
Have a watch of the music video for Second Dinner (which I just partook in myself).

It's a bit, Donny is a character, but it's done in a really fun, good faith way. Also does have some ageing positivity woven into it. There's a genuine appreciation for the music & aesthetics that inspired the tunes coupled with Donny having a little fun at his own expense.

I just got a fresh grilled chicken with pasta and a vegie salad plus noodle soup and rice. With the hot sauce too! mmmm!

OK yes, thank you. He does do that 80's thing well too.

I defretted this MTD Z6, refinished it, and gave it to a former student’s son (a classical bass student).

Boomers ruined the world, so just deal with it and move on. I should know, I'm a brooding, cynical Gen Xer. No one was there to let me in after school. I fed myself. Millenials are just junior boomers, self-important and self-referential...like your opinion about your avocado toast matters, ha. The OP sounds more like a GenZ anyway, which surprises me they/them would even be here instead of posting about a recent Shein purchase on TikTok. Don't you know that internet forums are all filled with old men these days? :cigar:

Before you get a bent out of shape, this is satire.

While my fretted bass is currently away, I've been writing basslines on a computer & have been realizing I'd really love to have a fretless.

Problem is, almost all of the fretless basses I can find are 'sunburst' this and 'brown burst' that. Warm reds, oranges & browns abound; godawful high-gloss topcoats, cheesy dated pickguards, it's all there. I presume this is because most fretless players out there haven't progressed past where they were 30-40 years ago. The few exceptions seem to be either 'boring metalhead black' or 'natural finish over boring wood'.

Do fretless basses with actually fun, vibrant finishes, or natural finishes over really characterful wood, exist? Especially do they exist under $1k? If not, what's the best course of action- defretting & adjusting the string height of a bass that actually looks good, or going in on a cheaper fretless & getting it refinished?

Now boomers are getting blamed for bass finishes

I wonder if anyone here knows (well besides us baby boomers) that the term "baby boomer" didn't exist before about 1980 at least as far as common usage goes and that it was not shortened and turned into the word "boomer" until fairly recently and is almost always used in a disparaging way.

Who invented the term Baby Boomer?
When I hear "Boomer", I turn my hearing aids off. Usually nothing good comes afterward. j/k...I don't have hearing aids...but I should.

Without boomers, I doubt there'd even be a TB forum here...

Zillenial. Old enough to have used forums at one point in internet history & have a disdain for TikTok, young enough to still fill the vacuity in my head with absurdist humor & nihilism.

I might be aware of that & it may have informed how I phrased this thread, for a bit of bants alongside the fretless search ;)

I've been playing fretless for a long time and to me anyway the best 'bang for the buck' (boomer phrase ) you could get would be a Fender Tony Franklin fretless, they're more than you want to spend but they sound great and play very nicely, the necks feel closer to a Jazz than a Precision and they have ebony fretboards which are as tough as nails which means you can put just about any string you want on them and won't have to worry about buzzes and ruts for at least a reasonable amount of time. I've had Rotosound RS66's on mine now for about 6 months and if they are not the most abrasive string there is, they're pretty close and the bass still plays fine with no buzzes. I modded mine with another volume control, you could always take the pickguard off and have someone fashion a metal piece kind of like on a Jazz bass for it like John Wetton did years ago, picture is down below.

That Ric was actually a very boring boomer color (fire glow) and my friend I bought it from had it refinished in it's current nitrocellulose surf green.
Well that was a damn good idea because that's a color that looks so good on there that I never seen before or even thought would look good on that. I will say that some of the rare dark brown burst rics look cool. Tobacco I think they call it. If I may I want to say that you should see how all black pickguard and truss rod cover would look. I see that looking awesome on there. I liked the black on mine when I had one.
