Do I need a P bass?

This post is full of neurosis. Be aware.

I play bass in a band infrequently, but I'd like them to start playing more often and picking up more shows. I play a Grabber, which I love. I was in another band, which is looking for a new drummer, and played a G3 with them. I got rid of all my basses that weren't vintage... just kind of my way of keeping from buying all kinds of crap I didn't need.

I got a fantastic deal on a P bass ($180), MIM, 2003ish, sunburst, good condition. I put a new pickguard on it and Duncans in it. I like it, dunno when I'll use it, but it's nice.

I have kind of always wanted a Fernandes Vertigo with a sustainer, but without a floyd. I found a pretty good deal on a VERY beat up one (hence the low price). I could basically sell the bass to buy the Vertigo. I'm debating it.

So the question is... do I need a P bass? It'd basically permit me to get a guitar I've wanted for a long while for $200ish bucks if I sold it, but having a P bass around is pretty nice, and I know if I sold it, it'd cost me... well, what I'm selling it for to buy another. I also know, if I were trying to get a vintage one, even an MIJ from the 80s or so, I'd spend at least twice as much, so that's not likely. Thoughts?

If you play a lot of music that sounds good or sounds best with a P-bass type sound, then I'd say its probably a good idea to keep the P or have something with a P-type pickup.

But if you only occasionally play songs like that, or just have a couple in your lineup, then a jazz with the front pickup soloed or most dual soapbars with the front soloed will be just fine.

if your questioning whether you should or shouldn't - you probably should sell it and get what you want. when I got my precision - I knew 'this was it' and that i'd never sell it.
I've had many basses since - sold a few- but i've held on to the precision since I got it in 1973.

He said he loves the grabber, man! I don't mean any offence at all by this, but your (purely subjective) opinion probably isn't going to convince him to drop it. Plus, you didn't make a really strong argument against grabbers. :)

You can always get another P, they're everywhere. With the Fernandes, if you let it slip away, who's to say you'll stumble across the same deal any time soon?
