I like the no-muss, no-fuss, set-it-and-forget-it simplicity of passive basses. Not having to worry about batteries is nice too. I've had batteries die on me mid-gig and I either didn't have a spare battery or a screwdriver for the control cavity or battery compartment door. Even now in 2022, not all active basses come with easy access battery compartments.
However, there is something to be said about the hot-rodded power of active electronics. There are many who say that you need some sort of active electronic system to properly reproduce the tones of low B or other bone-rattlingly low drop tunings used in a lot of modern metal, like a low G or something (two whole steps below a low B).
I've seen plenty of passive 5-strings hold their own quite well, like the discontinued Schecter Apocalypse
I've had basses de-active-ated in the past (4-strings) and they sounded more open and free than they did when shackled to preamps.
My two main basses are a pair of LTD 5-strings that feature passive soapbars (an F-205 with EMG-HZs, and a D-5 with ESP Designed pups) coupled to 3-band active preamps. Next summer I plan to have a respected luthier rewire the EMG-HZ equipped F-205 passive. I currently plan to keep the D-5 stock/active save for replacing the strap pins with Dunlop Straplocks. But we'll see.
EDIT: On the other hand, you have basses like the ESP/LTD [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that have active pickups (that need a battery) but simple vol/bal/tone "passive" controls so you get active power with passive simplicity. This setup is not something seen every day.
