I have both passive and active basses, and I doubt I will ever really buy another active bass ever again. While I have been able to dial in a sound I like, I just feel like it is overkill for what I am doing. I find that I actually prefer the passive basses a lot more and are far easier to get the tone I am looking for in any given scenario. I will say that one of my active basses (I have two) does have an active/passive switch, which is great, except that it does not also have a passive tone control in there. The other bass is straight active (I do have a desire to replace the preamp in it, though, with one that does have an active/passive switch).
